Cape Verde reach the World Cup knockout rounds at the first attempt, after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston ensured second place in Group H behind Spain. The Blue Sharks now prepare for a last-32 clash with defending champions Argentina, a landmark fixture for the island nation.
The debutants finished the group unbeaten with three draws, including another 0-0 against Spain in their opening match. Cape Verde are the first World Cup newcomers to escape the group since Slovakia in 2010, and the first African team to do so on debut since Ghana in 2006.

Head coach Bubista underlined both belief and wider ambition for the national team after qualification. “To us, nothing is impossible,” Bubista said. “From the very beginning, we’ve said that one of the purposes we had was to show our country to the rest of the world. To be able to play Argentina and [Lionel] Messi in a phase like this is excellent for our country, regardless of the match itself.”
Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the World Cup progress as surreal, but urged calm focus before facing Argentina. “Honestly, it’s mad. I feel like I’m in a dream,” added midfielder Deroy Duarte. “First, let’s celebrate. We’re so happy. Let’s hope all Cape Verdeans are happy, too. It’s [a tough match] against Argentina, but let’s believe. Anything is possible.”
While Cape Verde celebrate, Saudi Arabia extend a difficult record at the World Cup. The Green Falcons have now failed to reach the knockout phase in six straight tournament appearances. The draw against Cape Verde produced their first clean sheet at the finals since a 1-0 victory over Belgium in 1994.
Defensive structure improved, but Saudi Arabia struggled badly in attack across all three group games. Georgios Donis’ side managed only 17 shots in total and finished with an expected goals figure of 1.2. Both numbers are Saudi Arabia’s lowest attacking returns in a single World Cup.
| Team | World Cup 2026 stat | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Verde | Group H record | 3 draws, 0 defeats |
| Cape Verde | Stage reached | Last 32 vs Argentina |
| Saudi Arabia | Total shots | 17 |
| Saudi Arabia | Expected goals (xG) | 1.2 |
| Saudi Arabia | Clean sheets at finals since 1994 | 1 |
Donis openly criticised Saudi Arabia’s attacking display after the goalless draw with Cape Verde, stressing the lack of creativity. “We were very poor at creating actions. One cannot win a game this way,” the head coach said. “Our line of attack was not doing well. Our greatest problem was creation and this was self-evident. It was not what we wanted because, when playing in such a match against a team more or less the same level of us, our level was not good. This gives cause for concern.”
Cape Verde now carry African and neutral support into the last 32, having matched Senegal’s 2002 unbeaten group campaign for World Cup debutants. Saudi Arabia, despite defensive improvement, leave with long-term questions about attacking structure and chance creation after another group-stage exit.
