In a landmark chapter for African football, five nations have astonishingly reached a World Cup knockout for the first time in this World Cup 2026 edition.
Cabo Verde, DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, and South Africa – all have achieved what no previous generation could, qualification for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.

This unprecedented feat unfolded at this expanded 48-team 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. African nations have done exceedingly well, as teams have made historic, giant strides forward.
The Five African Knockout Debutants
Cabo Verde made their World Cup debut in spectacular fashion. The smallest nation ever to reach the knockouts secured second place in their group through resilient draws, including against strong opposition. Their “Blue Sharks” have written a fairy-tale story of defiance and unity.
DR Congo returned to the World Cup after 52 years. Their determined campaign, capped by playoff heroics, culminated in a historic Round of 32 berth-their first-ever advancement.
Cote d’Ivoire ended years of heartbreak. After group-stage exits in 2006, 2010, and 2014 despite star-studded squads featuring the likes of Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, the Elephants finally broke through with clinical performances, securing second place in their group.
Egypt, powered by Mohamed Salah and a resilient squad, achieved what previous Pharaohs could not. Following appearances in 1934, 1990, and 2018-all ending in the group stage-they secured their first-ever knockout qualification, bolstered by key victories and draws that showcased tactical maturity.
South Africa delivered pure joy. After failing to advance from the group stage as 2010 hosts and in prior tournaments (1998, 2002), Bafana Bafana clinched their maiden knockout spot with a dramatic win over Korea.
Apart from these five, Morocco, Senegal, Algeria and Ghana have also progressed to the knockouts. Tunisia are the only African country who have eliminated from the group stages.
