Who is Arun Rajkumar?

Arun Rajkumar is an Indian-origin engineer currently working as a Trackside Power Unit Engineer for Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP).

He has been with Mercedes for the last seven years, playing a key role in monitoring and optimising the performance and reliability of the team’s power units during race weekends.

His responsibilities include providing real-time engineering support from the track, analysing data throughout practice sessions, qualifying and races, and ensuring the power unit performs at its maximum potential under varying race conditions.

Rajkumar graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Birmingham before joining the Mercedes Formula 1 programme.

Why was Arun Rajkumar on the Formula 1 podium?

Rajkumar represented Mercedes during the podium celebrations after the Silver Arrows secured victory at the Austrian Grand Prix.

In Formula 1, alongside the winning driver, a representative from the victorious constructor is invited onto the podium to receive the Constructors’ Trophy.

Following Mercedes’ dominant afternoon in Spielberg, Rajkumar was chosen to collect the award on behalf of the team’s engineering division.

He celebrated alongside race winner George Russell, second-placed Max Verstappen, and Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who completed the podium in third.

His appearance quickly caught the attention of Indian motorsport fans on social media, with many celebrating the rare sight of an Indian-origin engineer featuring in one of Formula 1’s most iconic podium moments.

Mercedes enjoy dream afternoon in Austria

George Russell claimed his latest Formula 1 victory after a composed drive at the Red Bull Ring, finishing 1.611 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Antonelli continued his impressive rookie campaign by securing third place, helping Mercedes score a valuable double podium and maximum Constructors’ Championship points for the weekend.

The victory also helped Russell reduce the gap to championship leader Antonelli, while Mercedes celebrated one of its strongest weekends of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Growing Indian presence in Formula 1

Although India has not had a full-time Formula 1 driver since Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok, Indian engineers continue to play important roles behind the scenes across the paddock.

Arun Rajkumar’s appearance on the Austrian Grand Prix podium offered another reminder of India’s growing contribution to the sport, even if it comes away from the spotlight occupied by the drivers.
