Maguire Welcomes Rashford Return Talks At Manchester United

Harry Maguire believes Marcus Rashford could yet remain with Manchester United this summer, if all sides approve. The defender expects discussions between Rashford and club leaders to decide whether a return suits everyone. Rashford’s form at Barcelona has increased interest, yet Maguire still sees a possible Old Trafford future, provided any agreement leaves the forward content and the club satisfied.

Rashford spent this season with Barcelona after a loan spell at Aston Villa in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign. The move to Spain followed several years of speculation about Rashford’s long-term status at Manchester United. Performances in LaLiga and domestic cups have made the 28-year-old a significant part of Barca’s attack.

Despite that impact, Rashford’s stay in Spain is uncertain after Anthony Gordon’s 70m transfer to Barcelona. Rashford reportedly has a 40m release clause specifically for English teams, excluding Manchester City and Liverpool. That clause could tempt Premier League clubs, while keeping a path open for Manchester United if a new agreement is reached.

Rashford’s displays for Barcelona helped deliver major trophies. The forward contributed to LaLiga and Supercopa de Espana success, recording 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. Those 25 direct goal involvements ranked fourth in the squad, behind Lamine Yamal with 41, Fermin Lopez on 30 and Raphinha with 28 across the campaign.

That attacking output secured Rashford a place in England’s World Cup squad. National team selection underlined confidence in Rashford’s current level after leaving Old Trafford on loan. The forward now faces a decision between remaining abroad, returning to Manchester United or joining another English club that activates the clause.

Since debuting for the Manchester United first team in the 2015-16 season, Rashford has built a substantial record. Across 287 appearances in all competitions, Rashford has scored 87 goals and supplied 40 assists. Manchester United begin the 2026-27 Premier League season against Hull City on August 22, which could mark a fresh chapter if Rashford comes back.

Maguire stressed the personal connection with Rashford when speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast. “I have an amazing relationship with Marcus and have had some great times with him over the years,” Maguire said on The Rest Is Football podcast. That history shapes Maguire’s belief that Rashford could again be central at Old Trafford.

Maguire then outlined what any agreement should look like from the player’s side and the club’s view. “I know what a wonderful player he can be. I’m sure its up to the club and up to Marcus to find a mutual agreement. Of course, if Marcus does come back, we want him to come back and play and be happy and confident. It needs to be right for himself, it needs to be right for the club, but everyone knows what a great player Marcus can be for whatever club he plays for next season.”

The situation now depends on talks between Rashford, Manchester United and interested clubs regarding that 40m clause. Barcelona’s signing of Anthony Gordon may shape their plans, while United weigh attacking options before facing Hull City. Whatever the decision, Rashford’s recent record for club and country keeps the forward central to transfer discussions this summer.
