The UK Government is urging local councils to approve extended opening hours for pubs so that fans can watch England’s Round of 16 World Cup match against Mexico, which kicks off at 1 am BST on Monday.
The game, to be played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 6 July, falls awkwardly for British viewers due to the seven-hour time difference. Standard licensing relaxations for the 2026 tournament allow pubs to remain open until 1am for most knockout matches and until 2am for later kick-offs, but the 1am start requires individual Temporary Event Notices.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has written to councils encouraging swift approval of these applications to enable communal viewing.
The move aims to support the hospitality sector and allow fans to gather for what is expected to be one of the tournament’s most demanding fixtures for England. Councils will retain discretion over approvals, taking into account local circumstances and public safety.
“We’re making sure pubs can stay open early on Monday morning for the England game. I know lots of people making their plans. If you are planning to watch on the pub, that is great. It is really good for pubs as well. Come on England,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.
England progressed to the last 16 following their win over DR Congo in the Round of 32 stages. Harry Kane scored both goals as Three Lions came from behind to win against the World Cup debutants, setting up a challenging encounter against a strong Mexican side on home soil. The result will determine progression to the quarter-finals.
