Cape Verde On The Map After World Cup Heroics Against Argentina

Cape Verde’s first World Cup campaign ends with a narrow 3-2 extra-time loss to Argentina, yet the team leaves North America with global respect. Ranked 63rd at kick-off, Cape Verde became the lowest-ranked nation to reach the knockout rounds since FIFA rankings began in 1992.

Defender Roberto Lopes believes that run has changed how the football world sees the Atlantic island nation. Lopes stressed that Cape Verde had earned recognition beyond expectations, after pushing the reigning champions to the limit in the round-of-32 tie played in Miami on Friday night.

Lopes said the squad’s progress meant supporters everywhere now understood Cape Verde’s place in international football. “One of the best things to come from this World Cup is that nobody asks where Cape Verde is on the map any more; this is history in itself for us. We’ve put ourselves on the map,” Lopes told BBC Sport. “We’re a small nation but with big hearts, and we showed what is possible, and if you believe, you can achieve.”

The match itself swung repeatedly. Lionel Messi opened the scoring during normal time, only for Deroy Duarte to equalise and send the tie towards an intense finish. Argentina moved ahead again two minutes into extra time through Lisandro Martinez, but Cape Verde responded once more with a spectacular goal by Sidny Cabral.

Diney Borges later diverted the ball into Cape Verde’s net, nine minutes from the end of extra time, ending hopes of a penalty shoot-out against the world champions. Despite that decisive own goal, head coach Bubista underlined how the performance against Argentina confirmed the team’s progress during this debut World Cup appearance.

Bubista highlighted that the squad had matched elite opposition over 120 minutes. “We showed that we may be a small country, but we can play against the best teams in the world,” Bubista said. “That’s a reason for pride. We made history for our country. They can be proud to represent our country. To be able to play the way we did against the world champions, and to draw level twice, is something incredible.”

Messi set more World Cup records during the contest. The Argentina captain became the first player to score seven or more goals in two separate tournaments, achieving that feat in both 2022 and 2026. Messi also extended his all-time World Cup scoring mark with his 20th goal at the finals.

That strike meant Messi has now scored in eight consecutive World Cup matches, further strengthening individual records that already stood before this tie. Yet Messi still called for improvements from Argentina, pointing out that the holders must refine several areas before the next stage of their title defence.

“Today, we put in a huge effort, as always, playing well and playing badly, just like we always say,” Messi said after the game. “But I think the important thing now is to rest, think about what’s coming next and try to take positives from today’s game. Beyond just qualifying, I think there are positives because we did some good things, and we also need to correct the bad ones, which I think were many today as well.”
