Asia Cup Returns in 2027 in New Format: Teams, Dates, Venue Revealed

The Asian Cricket Council has settled on a tentative window for the Men’s Asia Cup in 2027, setting the stage for a 50-over tournament that will double as a final competitive run-up to the ODI World Cup later that year.

After the Asia Cup in 2023, the tournament returns in the 50-over format after four years, and will be played by six teams.

The proposed schedule sees Bangladesh hosting the event between June 18 and July 4, 2027, with six teams expected to compete across 13 matches.

The decision to stage the Asia Cup in the ODI format is part of a preparatory event ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Reports indicate participants will likely include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and one qualifying Associate nation, which will be confirmed later.

Bangladesh retaining hosting duties provides continuity after the turbulence surrounding previous editions – notably the geopolitically charged shifts that pushed the 2025 tournament to neutral venues. While the ACC’s formal confirmation is still pending, media reports say the proposed dates have largely dispelled uncertainty over where this edition could fit within an increasingly crowded international schedule.

Asia Cup 2027 Format

The teams are expected to be drawn into two groups, and after initial group stages, teams will advance to Super Four. The top two teams in this stage will play the Final, culminating the tournament in 13 matches.

The teams will aim for sharp match practice rather than long league phases. For boards and broadcasters the Asia Cup remains commercially significant, offering a high-profile regional championship that draws attention across the subcontinent, as India and Pakistan’s clash is supposed to be the flagship encounter in the continental competition.

Beyond scheduling, administrative changes at the ACC and developments within the Bangladesh Cricket Board have reduced the risk of a hosting reversal. With new leadership at the BCB and a rotation system due to place the board in a stronger position within the ACC later in 2027, the prospects for Bangladesh’s role as host look more secure.
