New Delhi, May 23: Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20I captain appears increasingly uncertain with growing indications that the national selection committee is no longer convinced about his place in the side purely as a batter.
According to a senior BCCI source quoted by PTI, the selectors are largely in favour of moving on from the current T20 skipper after an extended lean patch, but the final decision may heavily depend on head coach Gautam Gambhir, who continues to back the Mumbai batter.

Suryakumar, famously nicknamed ‘SKY’ by Gambhir during their Kolkata Knight Riders days, has struggled for consistency over the past year. While his leadership credentials remain respected, concerns over his batting form have intensified following a disappointing IPL campaign.
The explosive batter managed just 210 runs from 12 innings this season at a strike-rate of 148, while averaging below 18 – numbers far below the standards expected from one of modern T20 cricket’s most innovative players.
“Initially the selectors thought that IPL would help Suryakumar regain form like last edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely there hasn’t been any technical course correction in his game,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.
“Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths and he has no answer. Selectors don’t see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that,” the source added.
Selection Panel Reportedly Wants Change
The report claims that all five selectors currently believe Suryakumar should no longer be an automatic starter in India’s T20 XI. The sentiment reportedly gathered momentum after India’s emotional T20 World Cup triumph glow began fading and the think tank shifted focus toward long-term planning.
A key concern within the system revolves around whether a player struggling to retain his place as a batter can continue leading the side.
“If someone can’t earn his place as a batter, how can he be a leader? Hence it is difficult to retain him but Ajit (Agarkar) and Gautam need to be on same page,” the source reportedly said.
However, Gambhir’s influence could prove decisive.
Those familiar with the Indian head coach’s functioning reportedly believe he plays a dominant role in team-building discussions and enjoys a particularly strong equation with Suryakumar. That relationship could potentially delay any drastic leadership decision.
Possible Successors Already Being Discussed
Even as uncertainty surrounds Suryakumar’s future, discussions regarding possible successors have already intensified within Indian cricket circles.
Shreyas Iyer is believed to be among the leading candidates owing to his tactical acumen and strong leadership personality. However, there are lingering questions over whether he and Gambhir can seamlessly coexist in the same setup following past perceptions around Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 success narrative.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has reportedly re-entered leadership discussions after another impressive IPL season with Gujarat Titans. Gill was earlier viewed as India’s long-term all-format captaincy option before a dip in form temporarily slowed those plans.
The selectors are also understood to be exploring a younger T20 core that could potentially include Gill, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in key batting roles.
At the same time, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is believed to be on a fast-tracked roadmap with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics firmly in mind.
Another emerging name is Tilak Varma, who has reportedly impressed influential figures within the system.
“Don’t rule out Tilak if Surya is sacked. There’s a reason that Tilak has been made captain for tri-nation A series where selectors would get to see his leadership skills,” the source added.
For now, Indian cricket finds itself at a critical transition point where form, leadership, long-term vision and dressing-room dynamics are all colliding at once.
And amid all the speculation, one thing appears increasingly clear – Suryakumar Yadav’s immediate future may ultimately depend on whether Gautam Gambhir still believes his captain deserves one final opportunity.
