Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have suffered a significant blow ahead of the IPL 2026 playoffs as young England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a left ring finger injury.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury while attempting a catch during RCB’s crucial league match against Punjab Kings on May 17.

Bethell left the field for immediate medical attention but had earlier opened the batting in the contest. Following a thorough assessment, RCB and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided that he would return home for further evaluation and rehabilitation.

Bethell’s participation in the ongoing IPL season had already been under scrutiny due to limited opportunities and a modest run of form. In seven matches for RCB this season, the left-handed batter scored 96 runs at an average of 13.71 and a strike rate of 124.68. He was retained by the franchise after making an impact in his debut IPL season in 2025, where he notched up a quickfire 55 against Chennai Super Kings.

RCB, who finished the league stage at the top of the table with nine wins from 14 games, will now head into Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans on May 26 without the dynamic Englishman. The franchise has wished Bethell a speedy recovery as they aim for back-to-back IPL titles.

The move also aligns with England’s priorities, as Bethell is being prepared for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, beginning June 4 at Lord’s. The ECB has emphasized the importance of the red-ball assignment for the promising youngster, who has shown immense potential as a top-order batter and slow left-arm spinner across formats.

This development comes amid earlier debates involving former England captains Alastair Cook and Michael Vaughan, who had suggested Bethell return home if not getting regular game time. Bethell, born in Barbados and representing Warwickshire domestically, remains one of England’s brightest young talents.
