Explained: Why India’s Bangladesh tour has hit another roadblock

India’s scheduled white-ball tour of Bangladesh has reportedly run into fresh uncertainty after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) paused its media rights process, raising new questions over whether the six-match series will go ahead as planned.

The tour, which is scheduled to feature three ODIs and three T20Is between August 1 and August 13, had appeared back on track earlier this month after the BCB invited bids for the series’ television and digital media rights. However, nearly two weeks later, the board has yet to release the Expression of Interest (EoI) documents required for broadcasters to participate in the bidding process.

Why has the media rights process stalled?

According to Cricbuzz, the BCB has put the process on hold while reassessing its plans.

“We have not issued the EoI documents because there has been a slight change in plans. We are now assessing the market before inviting bids. It is not true that we are withholding the EoI documents because of the India series,” a BCB source told the publication.

The BCB had originally announced that bidding for the media rights would conclude on July 22 but has not provided prospective broadcasters with the necessary documentation.

Has the India tour been affected?

There has been no official confirmation that the series has been postponed or cancelled.

However, multiple reports suggest there are fresh hurdles surrounding the tour.

One theory is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unhappy with the BCB putting the media rights up for sale before holding discussions between the two boards.

Another suggestion is that officials from both boards held talks during the ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh, potentially leading to a reassessment of the series timeline.

The EoI documents would need to include confirmed match dates, but while the BCB had earlier announced fixtures between August 1 and August 13, those dates are now understood to be under review.

Diplomatic tensions continue to cast shadow

India’s tour of Bangladesh has faced uncertainty for several months amid strained diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Optimism had increased after India appointed Dinesh Trivedi as its ambassador to Bangladesh last month, with some viewing the move as a positive step towards improving bilateral ties.

However, despite those developments, Cricbuzz reports that roadblocks still remain regarding the Indian team’s proposed visit.
