Do Recent UTT Defeats Validate Manika Batra’s Asian Games Exclusion?

When the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) left Manika Batra out of the main squad for the 2026 Asian Games, the decision triggered widespread debate.

As India’s most decorated active women’s paddler, Batra questioned the lack of transparency behind her omission. However, her performances in Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 have inevitably added another dimension to that discussion.

While one tournament alone cannot define a player’s quality, Manika’s recent results have strengthened the argument of those backing the selectors.

The biggest setback came on July 12 when 16-year-old Syndrela Das stunned the Indian star in straight games (11-8, 11-10, 11-7) as Dempo Goa Challengers edged Ahmedabad APL Pipers 8-7. It was one of the standout upsets of the season, with the teenager outplaying the vastly more experienced former Commonwealth Games champion.

Two days later, another young Indian paddler, Sayali Wani, added to Manika’s struggles. After losing the opening game 5-11, Sayali fought back to win 11-8 before saving three successive tie points in the decider to force a Golden Point, eventually sealing an 11-10 victory and handing UP Prometheans an 8-7 win. The comeback highlighted Manika’s inability to close out a winning position despite leading 10-7 in the final game.

Manika Batra’s UTT 2026 Record So Far

Through Ahmedabad APL Pipers’ opening three ties in Butterfly UTT Season 7, Manika has endured a difficult campaign.

For a player expected to lead Ahmedabad’s women’s singles challenge, three defeats in as many outings represent an unusually lean run.

Do These Results Justify the Selection Decision?

It would be inaccurate to claim that these defeats alone justify Manika Batra’s exclusion from the Asian Games squad because the selection decision had already been announced before UTT Season 7 began.

The TTFI’s selection was understood to have been based on a combination of international ranking, domestic ranking, participation in domestic events and selection criteria, with Manika herself questioning how those criteria were applied. However, from a purely sporting perspective, the selectors’ decision appears easier to defend after these performances.

Successive losses to emerging domestic players such as Syndrela Das and Sayali Wani also suggest India’s younger paddlers are rapidly closing the gap. With the Asian Games demanding players in peak competitive form, recent domestic performances inevitably influence public perception, even if they were not part of the original selection process.

That said, it would be premature to write off Manika. She remains one of India’s finest-ever table tennis players, a former World No. 24, Commonwealth Games champion and Asian Games medallist whose experience has often proved invaluable on the international stage. A brief dip in form does not erase years of excellence.
