Rohit Sharma reportedly spoke to senior BCCI officials after being informed that he is no longer part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the discussions failed to provide the veteran opener with any reassurance about his future.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the 39-year-old is expected to play his final ODI for India in Sunday’s third and final match against England at Lord’s, although there has been no official confirmation from either the BCCI or Rohit regarding his retirement.
Rohit Sharma reportedly sought clarity from BCCI
The report states that chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee informed Rohit that the team management intends to move in a younger direction ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Following those discussions, Rohit is said to have spoken with senior BCCI officials during the ongoing England series in an attempt to understand his future with the national side.
However, according to the report, the veteran batter did not receive the response he was hoping for and left the conversations disappointed.
Selectors reportedly planning for the future
The report adds that India’s selectors are looking to give younger players greater opportunities as preparations begin for the next ODI World Cup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates to feature regularly in the ODI setup, with the management focusing on building a squad for the 2027 tournament.
Rohit Sharma struggles against England
The speculation over Rohit’s future comes amid a quiet ODI series against England.
The former India captain has managed scores of 11 and 26 in the opening two matches, with his 26 in Cardiff coming from 47 deliveries.
His recent form has followed an inconsistent run across ODI series against New Zealand, Afghanistan and England, despite earlier strong performances against Australia and South Africa.
An illustrious ODI career
Rohit stepped down as India’s ODI captain after the 2025 Champions Trophy, with Shubman Gill succeeding him as skipper.
Under Rohit’s leadership, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title before retiring from the shortest format, and later announced his retirement from Test cricket following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Despite his achievements, the ODI World Cup remained the one major title that eluded him. Rohit missed India’s triumphant 2011 campaign before representing the country at the 2015, 2019 and 2023 editions.
As of now, neither the BCCI nor Rohit Sharma has officially confirmed that Sunday’s ODI at Lord’s will be his final appearance in the format.
