Delhi Capitals (DC) entered IPL 2026 with one of the most balanced squads on paper. With experienced names such as Axar Patel, Mitchell Starc, Tristan Stubbs and KL Rahul in the setup, expectations were high for the franchise to challenge for a playoff spot.
However, the Capitals endured another disappointing campaign and found themselves outside the top-four race. While there were flashes of brilliance throughout the season, inconsistency and poor execution in crucial moments ultimately cost them.

Here are three major reasons behind Delhi Capitals’ disappointing IPL 2026 season.
1. Delhi Capitals batting unit failed to deliver consistently
Delhi’s biggest issue throughout the campaign was the inconsistency of their batting lineup. The Capitals often looked capable of posting massive totals, but their performances varied drastically from one game to another.
They registered some imposing scores during the season, only to follow them up with dramatic collapses in subsequent matches. The batting order repeatedly failed to build partnerships and absorb pressure during crunch situations.
The most alarming aspect was the lack of responsibility shown by senior batters during difficult phases. Several matches slipped away after top-order collapses left the middle order with too much work to do.
2. Struggles in the powerplay overs
Powerplay performance played a huge role in DC’s downfall this season. Whether with the bat or the ball, the Capitals rarely managed to dictate terms in the first six overs.
Their batting unit recorded one of the lowest scoring rates in the powerplay phase, frequently putting themselves under pressure before the middle overs even began. Slow starts forced the middle order into high-risk situations, resulting in further collapses.
The bowling attack also struggled to make early breakthroughs. Opposing teams regularly got off to strong starts, allowing them to control matches from the outset and leaving Delhi chasing the game.
3. Failure to capitalise on crucial moments
Several of Delhi’s defeats came in closely contested encounters where they failed to execute basic plans at key stages.
Whether it was dropped chances, poor decision-making under pressure, ineffective death bowling or missed opportunities with the bat, the Capitals repeatedly failed to seize momentum when it mattered most.
The lack of composure in pressure situations proved costly throughout the season. Small mistakes accumulated over the course of the tournament and ultimately prevented DC from converting competitive performances into victories.
A season of missed opportunities for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals had the talent and experience required to challenge for a playoff berth, but inconsistency across departments prevented them from building momentum. Poor powerplay performances, unreliable batting displays and an inability to deliver in decisive moments combined to derail their IPL 2026 campaign.
With several core players expected to remain in the setup, DC will now turn their attention to addressing these issues and returning stronger in IPL 2027.
