Sangakkara Defends Riyan Amid Criticism

Following Rajasthan Royals’ crucial victory over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium – a virtual knockout fixture that kept their playoff hopes alive – Sangakkara delivered a strong defence of his young captain.

“I’ve seen very few players who have been criticised like that,” Sangakkara said during the post-match press conference.

“He’s been criticised for about seven years now, ever since I came to the franchise. There are always people who like Riyan, but there are a lot of people who didn’t really like him, especially on social media. And that’s the reality of the modern game.”

The former Sri Lanka captain acknowledged the pressure Riyan has endured publicly throughout his career but insisted the franchise never doubted his leadership potential.

“When we decided to offer Riyan the captaincy, he is the absolute right guy to lead this franchise,” Sangakkara said.

“I have no doubt in my mind.”

The Wankhede Tactical Call That Impressed RR Management

Riyan’s captaincy during the high-pressure clash against Mumbai Indians particularly strengthened Rajasthan’s confidence in him.

The Royals skipper’s handling of Jofra Archer during key phases of the game drew praise internally, especially his aggressive tactical approach under pressure.

“He will grow. He will mature. He will understand himself a lot more. He will learn to understand his players a lot more,” Sangakkara said.

“But even today, if you look at the goals he makes as captain, the confidence with which he does, he drags himself almost on one foot sometimes to come and play.”

The RR coach further praised Riyan’s aggressive leadership style and the respect he commands within the squad.

“I think he’s captained exceptionally well. He’s led his team exceptionally well. He’s been aggressive. He’s got the respect of all the players in this club. He’s a very, very good young man.”
