‘I’ve Waited Five Years’- New Era For French Football Begins As Zinedine Zidane Is Appointed Head Coach

A new era of French football has begun as former player and legend Zinedine Zidane steps in as the new head coach of the France national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps. Zidane has signed a four-year contract with the French Football Federation (FFF).

The French federation president Philippe Diallo officially unveiled Zidane at the federation’s headquarters in Paris on Tuesday, ending years of speculation over the former Real Madrid manager’s return to coaching. Zidane has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, having repeatedly turned down club offers while waiting for the opportunity to lead Les Bleus.

Speaking after his appointment, an emotional Zidane described the role as the fulfillment of a long-held dream.

“I’ve waited five years for this chance. The France team makes you dream. We have extraordinary players and an extraordinary team,” Zidane said. “I didn’t take a club side because the only thing I wanted to do after Madrid was coach the France team.”
Diallo hailed the appointment as “an exceptional moment,” calling Zidane “one of the legends of French football” and expressing confidence in his ability to usher in a new era for the national team.

The 54-year-old takes charge following the end of Deschamps’ successful tenure, during which France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, reached the 2022 World Cup final, and made the Euro 2016 final. France’s latest World Cup campaign ended with a semifinal defeat to Spain, after which Deschamps stepped down.

Zidane paid tribute to his predecessor, thanking him for his achievements with the national side.

“I would like to congratulate Didier Deschamps for these remarkable years. Today I have the opportunity to lead this team, and I will give everything so that France can win,” he said.

How Will Zidane’s Coaching Help Les Bleus?

Known for his attacking philosophy, Zidane also hinted at a different tactical identity under his leadership.

“What motivates me is the game. I was a No. 10, I like goals. I was a leader on the field, and now I want to be a leader through experience,” he added.

As a player, Zidane is regarded as one of France’s greatest footballers. He inspired Les Bleus to their maiden FIFA World Cup title in 1998, scoring twice in the final against Brazil, and helped the nation lift the UEFA European Championship in 2000. At club level, he enjoyed decorated spells with Juventus and Real Madrid before guiding the Spanish giants to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles as manager.

Zidane’s first assignment as France coach will come in the UEFA Nations League, with an away fixture against Turkey on September 25, followed by a trip to Belgium three days later. His first home game in charge will be against Italy at the Stade de France on October 2.
