Justin Langer Breaks Silence on England Test Coach Role Amid ECB Speculation

Justin Langer has revealed he has not been approached by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding its vacant Test head coach position, despite being widely linked with the role following Brendon McCullum’s departure from the red-ball setup.

The former Australia coach said reports connecting him with the job were merely speculation, though he admitted he would consider the opportunity if England made contact.

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Langer confirmed he has not had any communication with the ECB.

“No, I haven’t, no,” Langer said when asked if anyone from the ECB had contacted him.

“No, I haven’t heard from anyone. You read all this… It’s all paper talk, it’s all rumours.”

His comments suggest he is currently not among the candidates being actively pursued by England managing director Rob Key, who is leading the recruitment process.

England job remains one of cricket’s biggest roles

While Langer previously joked that the idea of coaching England was difficult to imagine given his Australian background, he acknowledged that it remains one of the sport’s most prestigious coaching positions.

“There’s three coaching roles in the world as a coach that anyone would consider,” Langer said.

“The Australia head coach, the Indian head coach, and the England head coach. But it’s all hypothetical, isn’t it?

“When it comes to coaching, it’s a career, and everyone looks at all opportunities, don’t they?”

Several candidates remain in contention

England are searching for a new Test coach after deciding to split the red-ball and white-ball roles, with McCullum continuing as the white-ball head coach.

According to reports, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming, former England spinner Richard Dawson, ex-England batter Jonathan Trott and former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody are among the leading candidates for the permanent position.

Marcus Trescothick is also being considered as a possible interim coach for England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19.

Earlier this month, former England coach Andy Flower ruled himself out of contention, saying he was happy in his current roles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit.

‘There will be teething issues’

Langer believes whoever takes over the Test side will need to build a strong working relationship with McCullum as England adapt to a split-coaching structure.

“They’re going to have to work really well with Baz, and they’ve got to be really clear in their vision,” Langer said.

“Great leaders, you’ve got to be really clear in your vision, what you stand for, and then you go forward from there.”

Focus remains on franchise cricket

Langer is currently coaching Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred while continuing as head coach of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.

His comments effectively cool speculation linking him to the England vacancy, with the ECB expected to continue its search as preparations intensify for next month’s home Test series against Pakistan.
