If you are just reading this story, yes, be prepared to be astonished, but it’s as real as it gets. India are set to play five-time World Champions Brazil in a historic friendly match this year. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Thursday announced that the Indian men’s national football team will play a landmark international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3, 2026.
The match will be played at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata, which has hosted Argentina previously and has been graced with the presence of many footballing greats including Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and others.

The fixture marks the first-ever senior men’s meeting between the two nations and Brazil’s first senior international match on Indian soil. Brazil, currently ranked fifth in the FIFA World Rankings, will be the highest-ranked opponent India have faced since the rankings system was introduced in 1992.
The match forms part of Brazil’s post-2026 World Cup schedule during the FIFA international window. The Seleção will first play Australia in Townsville on September 25 and Brisbane on September 29 before travelling to India.AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan described the occasion as “an extraordinary moment” and “a landmark chapter in the history of Indian football.”
Subrata Paul, Director of National Teams, said the encounter offers Indian players a rare chance to test themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations and will inspire them to dream bigger.
“For our national team players, this is far more than just another match. It is a rare opportunity to test themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations the game has ever known. Experiences like these challenge players to grow, inspire them to dream bigger, and leave memories that stay with them throughout their careers,” Pal said.
India is widely recognised as having one of the largest Brazilian fan bases outside Brazil, a connection that helped drive the fixture after strong support for the Seleção during the recent World Cup.
