BCB Turns to Government to Keep India’s Bangladesh Tour Alive Amid Diplomatic Optimism

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stepped up efforts to ensure India’s scheduled white-ball tour goes ahead, with board president Tamim Iqbal meeting senior government officials to facilitate diplomatic engagement with India, as per a report from Cricbuzz.

Tamim, accompanied by BCB Security Committee chairman Sayeed Ibrahim, met Shama Obaed Islam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, on Thursday (July 30). The meeting focused on encouraging government-level communication with Indian authorities to convey that Bangladesh is prepared to host the Indian men’s cricket team for the proposed six-match series in September. While confirming the meeting, Tamim refrained from discussing the details.

The series, expected to feature three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals, is yet to receive official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to sources, the BCB has sought assistance from the Bangladesh government as it awaits clarity over the tour.

Speaking earlier this week, Tamim had expressed optimism about the series while acknowledging that the matter extends beyond the cricket board’s authority.

“We are hopeful about the series, but there are certain lines I cannot cross,” Tamim was quoted as saying, indicating that government-level discussions would play a crucial role in determining the tour’s future.

The bilateral assignment was originally scheduled for 2024 but was postponed following political unrest in Bangladesh. Although it was later pushed to 2025, uncertainty surrounding relations between the two cricket boards prevented the series from being finalised.

Recent diplomatic developments, however, have revived hopes of the tour taking place. India has reportedly invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in September, a move that has been viewed positively in both countries.

The latest developments also come after Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman indicated that Dhaka and New Delhi were committed to strengthening bilateral ties.

“We both agree that our two countries’ relations should move forward, keeping mutual interests at the forefront and, as I always say, on the basis of sovereign equality,” Khalilur told reporters following a meeting with India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the BCB is also yet to issue its Expression of Interest (EOI) for commercial rights despite the valuation process being completed. Board officials are understood to be waiting for greater certainty regarding India’s visit before proceeding with the next stage.
