In the quiet town of Belonia in Tripura, a bicycle mechanic’s dream once filled a modest home. Arjun Kumar Dey, who earned barely enough each day repairing cycles, poured every hope into his daughter Asmita.

He believed she could rise beyond their mud walls and limited means. That belief carried her from the running track to the judo mat, through injuries, and toward a destiny neither fully imagined.

Then, in December 2025, a sudden stroke took him away-just as Asmita prepared for the biggest stage of her life. Grief nearly broke her. “Everything had finished,” she later said.

Yet two months later she stood first at national trials, carrying his silent strength onto the tatami. And at the grandest stage of all, Asmita dazzled the brightest with a historic Gold for India in Judo, the first for the nation ever at a major event.

Trailing early, she fought back, forced Golden Score, and landed the decisive throw. History was made: India’s first Commonwealth Games judo gold. As the anthem played and the medal touched her chest, tears flowed – not only for the victory, but for the father who could not see it.

In that shining gold lived a daughter’s promise kept, a humble man’s dream fulfilled, and a nation’s quiet pride. Asmita Dey had turned loss into light. But Asmita’s story is stacked with an ironclad mindset, which has propelled her against the adversities.

Asmita and Grit Goes Hand by Hand

Speaking with her childhood coach Pranab Saha, who mentored her in the early days, just gave a few glimpses of a girl who was steadily preparing herself to take down the world.

“The way she was even at the early ages was amazing. She always wanted to work hard. She used to train in Belonia, and a talent search programme identified her. She was transferred to Agartala Sports School, and even when she was in class 6, her dedication was next level.”

“She used to say, ‘Sir aapni ja bolben, ami tai korbo training er jonyo’ (Sir whatever you direct me for training, I will do that). Manik Sir (Manik Lal Dev) and I decided to give her special attention as she was extremely talented.”

Coming from a family which had immense financial issues, Asmita always wanted to pave the pathway for financial stability. And she knew Judo was the way out. In the final, Asmita came back trailing by a point against Quach, which takes us to an afternoon in Telangana a few years ago.

Asmita’s Ascending began in Telangana

Saha, who is currently the secretary of the Judo Association in Tripura, depicted a moment that further instilled resilience and determination in Asmita’s budding mind.

“During a school national in Telangana, she lost a bout after a scoring confusion. She was in terrific form, and that defeat galvanized her. Instead of being down, she was adamant to win everything from then on. She was determined to avoid any partiality against her and prepared to dominate her opposition. And since then, I never saw her coming back empty-handed at any national-level event.”

Over the last few months, she has overcome personal tragedy, while during a national event a few years ago, the Indian Judoka also battled an ACL injury and reigned supreme despite that.

“Asmita had an ACL injury a few years back. She underwent rehab and a lot of hard work, and while playing with an issue, she won a gold medal at a national event.”

Following her sustained success on the national circuit, Asmita was rewarded with an appointment as a Sub-Inspector in the Uttar Pradesh Police, a fitting recognition of her remarkable achievements. She now divides her training between Delhi and the SAI Centre in Bhopal under the guidance of coach Yashpal Solanki, while her family continues to reside in Tripura.

Having already etched her name into Indian sporting history, Asmita now sets her sights on an even greater summit-the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. From nurturing impossible dreams in a quiet corner of the country to emerging as India’s trailblazing judo champion, her journey embodies resilience, sacrifice, dedication and unwavering ambition. If the trajectory continues on its current ascent, the young woman who once dreamed at the periphery of the nation could well become the face of India’s celebration in two years.
