India vs Bangladesh 2026: Tamim Iqbal Urges Government Support as September Tour Hangs in Balance

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal has stepped up efforts to ensure India’s scheduled white-ball tour of Bangladesh goes ahead, urging government-level engagement as uncertainty continues over the six-match series in September.

According to multiple reports, the BCB has sought diplomatic support to reassure India over the proposed tour, which remains subject to clearance from the Indian government despite both boards continuing preparations behind the scenes.

BCB turns to government as India tour remains unconfirmed

The proposed series, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is, has yet to receive official confirmation from the BCCI.

According to Cricbuzz, Tamim, accompanied by BCB Security Committee chairman Sayeed Ibrahim, met Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam to request that Dhaka initiate official communication with New Delhi.

The objective is to assure Indian authorities that Bangladesh is fully prepared to host the series in September. While Tamim confirmed the meeting took place, he declined to discuss the details.

Earlier this week, the former Bangladesh captain admitted that certain aspects of the tour were beyond the BCB’s control and would ultimately require government-level approval.

Political developments have fuelled optimism

India’s white-ball tour was originally scheduled for 2024 but was postponed following political unrest in Bangladesh. Although it was later moved to 2025, the series was delayed again amid broader diplomatic considerations.

Recent political developments, however, have raised hopes that the tour could finally take place.

Reports suggest India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the BRICS Summit in September, while officials from both countries have publicly spoken about resetting bilateral relations following recent diplomatic engagements.

The BCCI has consistently maintained that any decision on the tour will depend on approval from the Government of India.

Tamim visits BCCI Centre of Excellence during India trip

Amid the uncertainty surrounding the bilateral series, Tamim is also scheduled to visit the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

The visit, however, is understood to be unrelated to the pending tour.

The BCB has been exploring plans to establish its own Centre of Excellence in Dhaka and wants to study India’s high-performance model. Tamim and several BCB directors are expected to meet Centre of Excellence director VVS Laxman and understand the facility’s integrated approach to player development, sports science, biomechanics, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, analytics and age-group cricket.

The visit reflects Bangladesh’s long-term ambition to build a centralised high-performance system similar to India’s, even as the board awaits clarity on one of the biggest bilateral assignments on its calendar.

India tour remains key to Bangladesh’s plans

The proposed series remains commercially significant for the BCB, with reports indicating the board has delayed issuing its Expression of Interest for broadcast and commercial rights while awaiting greater certainty over India’s participation.

For now, Bangladesh’s cricket administrators remain hopeful that diplomatic progress will pave the way for the tour, with government-level discussions now forming a crucial part of efforts to bring India to Dhaka in September.
