India stamped its authority at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, clinching six of the seven gold medals on offer at the Thyagraj Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
The week-long tournament, held from July 27 to August 2, highlighted India’s growing strength across singles, doubles and mixed events, with only the men’s doubles title slipping away.
One of the biggest stories of the tournament came in the men’s singles, where 19-year-old Ankur Bhattacharjee emerged as the new Commonwealth champion. Bhattacharjee edged fellow Indian Payas Jain in a thrilling seven-game final, winning 4-3 after an intense battle. He had earlier overcome Manav Thakkar in the semi-finals to book his place in the title clash. Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar shared the bronze medals.
In the women’s singles, Yashaswini Ghorpade produced an impressive display to defeat Paris Olympian Sreeja Akula 4-1 in the final. Ghorpade controlled most of the contest to secure her maiden Commonwealth singles crown, while Syndrela Das and Sutirtha Mukherjee finished with bronze medals.
Malaysia prevented a complete Indian clean sweep by winning the men’s doubles title. Wong Qi Shen and Choong Javen defeated India’s Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah in straight games in the final. The Indian pair of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai secured bronze alongside Australia’s Nicholas Wen Zheng Lum and Aditya Sareen.
India regained control in the women’s doubles as Sreeja Akula and Syndrela Das defeated compatriots Yashaswini Ghorpade and Divyanshi Bhowmick 4-1 in the final to claim gold.
With six gold medals from the seven events, India once again reaffirmed its status as one of the strongest table tennis nations in the Commonwealth. The performances of emerging talents such as Bhattacharjee and Ghorpade, along with established internationals, reflected the country’s growing depth and bright future in the sport.
Best Table Tennis Player Awards
Syndrela Das won the award as the best female table tennis player in the competition.
Manush Shah won the best male player award after his stellar outing throughout the campaign.
