While no formal negotiations are believed to be underway, the reported discussions suggest Williams are keeping their options open as the Formula 1 driver market begins to take shape ahead of 2027.

Why is Sergio Perez being linked to Williams?

Perez is currently driving for Cadillac after joining the American outfit for its debut Formula 1 campaign in 2026.

However, the team’s inaugural season has been plagued by reliability issues and inconsistent performances, leading to speculation over Perez’s long-term future despite his wealth of experience.

According to reports, Perez’s representatives have already made initial contact with Williams, although the talks are understood to be exploratory rather than advanced.

The six-time Grand Prix winner is viewed as one of the most experienced drivers on the grid and could become an attractive option should a seat become available.

The uncertainty surrounding Carlos Sainz

Much of Williams’ driver market depends on Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard joined Williams believing the team could return to the front of the grid under James Vowles, but the project has stalled this season after the team slipped towards the back of the midfield.

Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Sainz admitted his original timeline for competing for victories has been pushed back.

“I think there’s no secret that my expectations or timeline of how long it would take me to win a race again, with Williams being the place to do that, has been delayed by a year or two,” Sainz said.

“It depends on how quickly we manage to bounce back from this situation.”

The Spaniard also confirmed he expects discussions over his future to take place during the summer break.

“I always said I was going to wait until the summer to sit down with my team and discuss the future of the team and my future in it,” he added.

Despite acknowledging Williams’ struggles, Sainz insisted he still believes in the long-term project being built under team principal James Vowles.

Williams keeping options open

With Sainz yet to make a decision on his future, Williams are reportedly assessing alternative options should the Spaniard decide to leave.

Perez’s experience, race-winning pedigree and ability to lead developing teams make him a logical candidate if an opening emerges.

Williams currently have no vacancy, but the situation is expected to become clearer once Sainz finalises his plans for 2027.

For now, Perez remains under contract with Cadillac, while Williams continue monitoring the market as one of Formula 1’s most closely watched driver stories heads towards a decisive phase.
