“No One Was Allowed”: Ajinkya Rahane Reveals MS Dhoni’s Strict Golden Rule

MS Dhoni’s exceptional leadership and the way he nurtured young talents have always been central to his legacy. Over the years, countless cricketers have spoken about how the legendary India captain created a welcoming and relaxed environment in the dressing room.

Recently, former India batter Ajinkya Rahane shared another fascinating insight into Dhoni’s off-field persona, revealing the one strict rule teammates had to follow regarding his personal space.

Rahane, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket, made his debut across all three formats under Dhoni’s captaincy. He also shared the dressing room with the veteran wicketkeeper-batter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for both the Rising Pune Supergiant and the Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking on a YouTube podcast, the 38-year-old opened up about Dhoni’s famous ‘open-door policy’ during grueling cricket tours. To help players unwind away from the immense pressures of the game, Dhoni’s hotel room often served as a common hangout spot for the entire squad.

“He’s very calm and cool and just a very normal human being like everyone,” Rahane recalled. “His room was almost always open for anyone to do anything. So many times, 10 to 15 of us, or even the whole team, were in his room.”

Whether it was chatting about the game, playing video games, or simply relaxing, younger players always felt at ease walking into their captain’s room. However, Rahane highlighted that Dhoni also valued his privacy, establishing a clear boundary that the team respected without question.

“But when his door was shut, no one was allowed,” Rahane revealed, shedding light on the unspoken golden rule among the players.

Rahane’s reflections come shortly after he brought the curtains down on a stellar career spanning nearly two decades. The dependable middle-order batter represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is between 2011 and 2023. He scored 8,414 international runs across all formats and cemented his reputation as one of the country’s finest overseas performers, leading India to a historic series victory in Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Meanwhile, speculation continues to mount over MS Dhoni’s cricketing future. The 44-year-old missed the entirety of the IPL 2026 season due to a severe leg injury, failing to feature in a single match for the Chennai Super Kings. It is yet to be confirmed if Dhoni will give it another season for CSK, but fans may likely see him in a new role.
