Max Verstappen Exit Could Reshape 2027 F1 Grid as McLaren Links Grow

Max Verstappen’s uncertain Red Bull future could have consequences far beyond the four-time world champion, with former F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi warning that his departure could trigger a chain reaction across the driver market.

Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028, but reports of performance-related exit clauses have continued to fuel speculation over his future. Recent reports have also claimed that McLaren and Verstappen are in advanced discussions, although neither side has publicly confirmed the talks.

Fittipaldi believes a Verstappen exit would set off a major reshuffle across the grid, describing the potential fallout as “musical chairs”.

“But possibly, he can leave. If that happened, it would be musical chairs. It’s going to move everybody.”

The two-time world champion acknowledged Verstappen’s loyalty to Red Bull but said a departure could not be ruled out.

“Max is an incredible talent. He carries his car on his back. I think he has a big loyalty to the team, and I like that.”

A move away from Red Bull would therefore not simply create one vacancy. It could force multiple teams to reconsider their driver line-ups, making Verstappen’s decision one of the most consequential pieces of the 2027 market.

While Mercedes has long been linked with Verstappen should he leave Red Bull, fresh reports have put McLaren increasingly into the picture.

According to PlanetF1, Verstappen and McLaren have reportedly held long-running discussions and could be approaching the final stages of negotiations. The claims remain unconfirmed by Verstappen, McLaren or Red Bull.

The speculation has intensified amid reports that Verstappen’s long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase could also move to McLaren. Red Bull’s recent struggles have added another layer to the uncertainty, with Verstappen currently sitting seventh in the championship and having suffered crashes at consecutive race weekends.

If Verstappen were to join McLaren, the team’s existing line-up of **Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri** would face an obvious dilemma. Piastri has consequently been mentioned in speculation linking him with a potential move to Red Bull.
