Bengal and Delhi Capitals player Abishek Porel was arrested by police in Hooghly on Monday night in connection with a case filed by a medical student, who has alleged that the cricketer had sexual relations with her after promising to marry her.

Porel was arrested by personnel from Mogra police station and is expected to be produced before a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday.

Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh confirmed the development and said, “There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” according to PTI.

The arrest comes weeks after the Calcutta High Court directed the police to take Porel into custody. On July 20, the court passed an order directing the authorities to arrest the cricketer in connection with the complaint. It also ordered the seizure of his electronic devices amid concerns over the possible circulation of photographs belonging to the complainant.

According to police sources, Porel has been booked under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the law. Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act have also been included in the case.

The complaint was filed on June 23 by a medical student from Karnataka at the Mogra police station. She claimed that she and Porel had been in a relationship for approximately three-and-a-half years and that they had discussed getting married.

The woman also alleged that she and Porel had travelled abroad together during their relationship. However, she claimed that their relationship later broke down after Porel denied that they were in a relationship, following which she approached the police.

The complaint further states that the two had a disagreement around 18 months ago, which led them to the police station. No formal complaint, however, was registered at that stage.

Police began investigating the allegations after receiving the June complaint. Investigating teams subsequently visited Porel’s residence in Chandannagar on several occasions but were unable to locate him.

The complainant then moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking further action in the matter. Following the hearing, the court directed police to arrest Porel on July 20.
