Hardik Pandya Gujarat Titans Return Collapsed Over Captaincy Demand: What Happened?

Hardik Pandya may want to go back to where his IPL captaincy story began, but Gujarat Titans appear to have moved on.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Pandya has explored a possible return to Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2027, with the franchise reportedly open to bringing him back. The stumbling block, however, was reportedly Pandya’s demand to return as captain.

That condition was rejected.

The report claims Gujarat had discussed the possibility with current captain Shubman Gill, who was also reportedly comfortable with the franchise trading for Pandya. But once the captaincy condition was put forward, the proposal fell apart.

Pandya’s spokesperson has since denied that the player had any direct conversation with another franchise, saying that any approach was made through Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat Titans have declined to comment.

If the report is accurate, though, the episode says as much about Pandya’s changing position in the IPL as it does about Gujarat’s decision to stick with Gill.

There is an obvious reason why Pandya would want the Gujarat captaincy.

This is the franchise where he established himself as an IPL leader.

Pandya was appointed captain when Gujarat entered the league in 2022 and immediately delivered the title. GT won the IPL in their debut season, with Pandya contributing 487 runs and eight wickets.

The following season, he took them to another final.

In two years, Pandya had turned an entirely new franchise into one of the strongest teams in the competition.

That makes his reported condition understandable.

But the problem for Pandya is that Gujarat has changed considerably since he left.

Shubman Gill is now the captain. More importantly, Gill is not simply an IPL captain looking for a bigger role. He is India’s Test and ODI captain.

Giving the leadership back to Pandya would therefore mean asking Gill to step aside at a time when his stature in Indian cricket has grown significantly.

And, according to the report, even Gill was willing to accommodate Pandya’s return only until the captaincy issue arose.

That is perhaps the most revealing part of the story.

Gujarat apparently had no major objection to bringing back the player.

They had an objection to giving him back the team.

Hardik Pandya’s case for captaincy has also weakened at Mumbai

Pandya’s desire to lead again comes at an awkward moment in his career as a captain.

Mumbai Indians had one of their worst seasons in recent memory in IPL 2026, winning only four of their 14 league matches and finishing ninth.

The result extended Mumbai’s IPL title drought to six years.

Pandya’s own campaign was also described as below par, while MI failed to produce a player who seriously challenged for either the Orange Cap or Purple Cap.

Their best batter, Ryan Rickelton, finished 17th among the leading run-scorers, while leg-spinner Allah Ghazanfar was 14th among the leading wicket-takers.

The problems went beyond results.

The Indian Express reported that Mumbai’s coaching staff had told senior players after the final game that they needed to be “coachable”, with the team believing there had been instances where recommendations backed by data were not followed.

That is significant because it places Pandya’s reported move into a wider context.

His position at Mumbai has already been under scrutiny. There have been questions over whether he will remain captain and even whether the franchise wants him to remain part of the squad.

Now, instead of moving to another franchise simply as an experienced all-rounder, he is reportedly seeking a return to Gujarat with the captaincy attached.

That makes the market for his services considerably more complicated.

The irony of the Gujarat-Mumbai move

Pandya’s IPL career has now come full circle in an unexpected way.

Mumbai Indians released him in 2022.

Gujarat Titans made him their captain and built their first IPL team around him.

He repaid that faith almost immediately, leading GT to the title in their first season and then another final in 2023.

He subsequently returned to Mumbai for IPL 2024, taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.

The move was one of the biggest stories of that IPL season, but Pandya’s relationship with the Mumbai fanbase was immediately difficult.

He was booed during his first season back as MI finished bottom of the table.

A better 2025 campaign appeared to suggest that the relationship was improving.

Then came 2026.

Mumbai won just four games, finished ninth and again found themselves questioning the direction of the team.

Now Pandya is reportedly looking towards Gujarat once again.

But the Gujarat he wants to return to is not the Gujarat he left.

Shubman Gill changes everything

The biggest reason the reunion makes little sense from Gujarat’s perspective is Gill.

When Pandya left, Gujarat had to find a new captain.

They chose Gill.

He has since developed into one of the most important leadership figures in Indian cricket and is now India’s captain in both Tests and ODIs.

That makes Gujarat’s reported decision not to give Pandya the captaincy more than a franchise-level call.

It is a decision about continuity.

Pandya would bring experience, proven leadership and a unique all-round skill set. But handing him the captaincy would also mean reversing the direction in which the franchise has developed since his departure.

There is little reason for Gujarat to do that simply because Pandya wants the role.

Especially when Gill is reportedly willing to share the dressing room with him.

Less about Gujarat and more about Hardik Pandya’s next chapter

The most interesting aspect of this story may therefore not be whether Pandya returns to Gujarat.

It is why captaincy has reportedly become such an important condition for his next move.

Pandya remains one of the most valuable Indian all-rounders in T20 cricket. His ability to bat in the middle order, bowl seam and provide leadership makes him a rare commodity.

But his leverage as a captain is no longer what it was when Gujarat entered the IPL.

At GT, he was the obvious leader because the franchise had been built around him.

At MI, his captaincy has come under increasing scrutiny after a 4-10 season.

And now, reportedly, he has been offered a route back to Gujarat only to find that the franchise does not want to undo the leadership structure it has created in his absence.

That is a significant shift.

Pandya’s reputation as a captain was built at Gujarat. His current situation suggests that reputation alone may no longer be enough to guarantee him the captaincy wherever he goes next.

Gujarat’s rejection could be the defining moment of the trade saga

There is still a long way to go before IPL 2027.

The details of the reported discussions remain disputed, and Pandya’s spokesperson has made it clear that the player did not directly negotiate with franchises.

But if the central claim is accurate, Gujarat have drawn a clear line.

They were reportedly willing to consider bringing back the man who gave them their first IPL title.

They were even willing to discuss the move with the captain who replaced him.

But they were not willing to give Pandya back the captaincy.
