The 30th edition of the BWF World Championships is set to take centre stage in New Delhi in August 2026, with India hosting the prestigious tournament for the first time since 2009. With extensive renovations and enhanced preparations at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Arena, organisers are leaving no stone unturned to deliver a world-class event.
The championship will bring together the finest badminton players from across the globe, competing for glory in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Along with the coveted world champion title, crucial ranking points will also be at stake, adding further significance to the tournament.
BWF World Championships 2026: Indian Shuttlers At Fray
India’s leading badminton stars will be among the major attractions at the BWF World Championships, with several players facing challenging draws in their respective events.
In men’s singles, Ayush Shetty has been handed a daunting opening-round assignment against reigning world champion Shi Yu Qi of China. Lakshya Sen, a bronze medallist at the 2021 World Championships, will begin his campaign against Austria’s Collins Valentine Filimon, with a win putting him one step closer to the pre-quarterfinals.
PV Sindhu will spearhead India’s challenge in women’s singles. The former world champion has been drawn against Ireland’s Sophia Noble, ranked 141st in the world, in her opening match.
In men’s doubles, India’s star pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have advanced directly to the second round after receiving a first-round bye. They will take on the winners of the clash between Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle and Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga.
