Shreyas Iyer is set to be appointed as the new captain of the Indian T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection panel have finalised this transition as the team prepares for an important phase leading into the 2028 T20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Suryakumar Yadav had taken over the T20I captaincy in 2023 and guided India to the T20 World Cup title in 2026. However, a prolonged lean patch with the bat in recent months has prompted the selectors to relieve him of leadership duties. The decision is being viewed as a forward-looking move to inject fresh energy into the side rather than resting on past achievements.
Why Shreyas Iyer?
The 31-year-old Shreyas Iyer brings rich leadership experience to the role. Having captained IPL franchises successfully and currently serving as vice-captain in the ODI setup, Iyer has consistently been part of India’s long-term succession plans. Known for his calm demeanour under pressure, tactical acumen, and strong middle-order batting, he is seen as the ideal candidate to lead the T20I side.
Selectors had also considered other options including Sanju Samson, but Iyer emerged as the clear frontrunner due to his consistent performances and leadership qualities.
End of an Era for Suryakumar Yadav
Under Suryakumar’s captaincy, India played fearless and innovative cricket. His personal contribution as a dynamic No.4 batter redefined India’s T20 approach. While he may continue as a specialist batter, the captaincy change marks the end of a successful chapter.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Set to Be Picked
The new era under Iyer will also witness the inclusion of exciting young talent. Promising 17-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi is set to be picked in the senior T20I squad for the upcoming series. His explosive performances in domestic and age-group cricket have fast-tracked him into the national setup, signalling India’s intent to blend youth with experience.
The official announcement is expected shortly, ahead of the T20I series against Ireland (June 26-28) followed by a five-match tour of England. The team is set to be picked on Saturday and the official reign for Shreyas as India captain will start in Ireland.
