New Delhi, August 24: There was a time when Lee Zii Jia was spoken about as Malaysian badminton’s next great hope, the player destined to step into the enormous shoes left behind by Lee Chong Wei.
The comparisons came naturally, and so did the expectations. But just as quickly as the promise began to turn into something tangible, his journey took a turn few could have anticipated.

From being touted as the heir to a badminton legacy to battling a decline that seemed almost unthinkable, Zii Jia’s story has been anything but straightforward. Till Paris Olympics, the Malaysian ace was on a winning run and was on course for Lee Zii Jia. However, once the Paris chapter got over, the Malaysian went into a series of injury layoffs which jeopardised the BWF circuit for Lee.
But the more alarming problem was that Lee drifted away from his national badminton association. There were rumours that there was an alarming rift between Badminton Malaysia and Lee.
First, let us know what happened in the backdrop which led to such a fractured relationship.
Souring Relations Between Lee & BAM
Lee Zii Jia’s journey as an independent shuttler began with a major controversy in January 2022, when the Badminton Association of Malaysia imposed a two-year ban after rejecting his demands for greater freedom over coaching, sponsorships and tournament planning.
The ban was lifted days later following an appeal and a meeting with BAM president Norza Zakaria, allowing Lee to pursue his career independently. The decision brought immediate success as he won the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships and rose to a career-high world No. 2.
He then secured Olympic bronze at Paris 2024. Lee continues to manage his own career, including his coaching team, sponsors and tournament commitments, outside the national setup. However, injuries have become a regular obstacle and roadblock for him.
Was Lee Zii Jia In An Open Rift With BAM?
According to sources familiar with the incident, Lee was not in direct conflict with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), and it was a mutual decision by the Malaysian shuttler.
“It was his individual choice when he saw that that was the best decision to be made at that time. Because I know during that time, there were so many speculations that said maybe Lee Zii Jia is out because of some, you know, different ideas or something like that,” said the source.
Malaysian journalist Faizal Bazari also corroborated this argument, saying that the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s training regime is too rigorous and hectic, which usually takes a toll on the shuttlers, a factor that likely influenced Lee’s decision.
For Lee, however, the decision was not simply about escaping a demanding system; it was about accepting the risks that came with forging his own path.
A Decision Made With His Eyes Wide Open
Lee knew that leaving BAM would come with its own set of challenges. Within the national setup, players have access to institutional support, particularly when it comes to injuries and other setbacks. Outside the system, however, those responsibilities rest entirely on the player.
Yet, Lee chose to walk that tightrope. While the early returns were encouraging and seemed to vindicate his decision, the longer journey has been far less consistent. Still, there are signs that his career is gradually finding some stability. BAM recently invited him to be part of the Asian Games squad, although Lee opted out, citing his poor form. He also appears to have put his differences with BAM behind him, occasionally training alongside the national squad.
Lee has since broken back into the top 50 and featured at the Korea Masters. But while the signs are encouraging, the road back to his best remains a long one.
