New Delhi, September 8: Naomi Osaka may have seen her U.S. Open campaign end on court, but she ensured she left the tournament making a statement in her own unmistakable style. The four-time Grand Slam champion suffered a one-sided fourth-round defeat to Elena Rybakina on Monday, yet once again stole the spotlight with another eye-catching fashion statement inspired by New York and basketball.
“I felt really swaggy when I put it on. I feel like it embodied New York a lot,” Osaka said after the match, reflecting on her final walk-on outfit.
The 28-year-old arrived for her last match wearing a colourful, fur-trimmed cloak designed by Brooklyn-based label KidSuper. The outfit was part of a series of basketball-themed looks created in collaboration with Nike, which has been celebrating the New York Knicks’ championship success. Osaka’s headband also drew inspiration from the iconic NBA logo, replacing the basketball player with a tennis player holding a racket.
Osaka’s fashion journey at this year’s tournament began with a dramatic tribute to NBA legend Allen Iverson. For her opening-round match, she wore a long white tulle skirt and a grey hooded robe, with cornrows and a headband completing the Iverson-inspired look. The ensemble was designed by New York streetwear label Who Decides War.
She followed that with a Thom Browne outfit featuring a flowing white jacket embroidered with crossed tennis rackets, while her skirt’s mesh fabric resembled a basketball net. In the third round, Osaka opted for a Monse creation combining an oversized grey suit jacket and hoodie with flowing fleece trousers.
Working with celebrity stylist Law Roach, known for his work with Zendaya, Osaka turned each match entrance into a fashion moment.
Despite her fourth-round exit, Osaka remained philosophical about her campaign, revealing she had been hampered by leg pain during the match.
“Maybe I’m just getting older, but I don’t feel sad,” she said, adding that another Grand Slam title would not change her life.
