How to style a kurta like the best-dressed guest in the room

The most sophisticated kurtas are often distinguished by texture rather than embellishment. For daytime ceremonies, linen, cotton-silk and fine handwoven fabrics offer depth while remaining breathable. Evening events can accommodate richer materials such as raw silk, matka silk or brocade, but consider how the textile catches light before thinking about embroidery. A fabric with a beautiful natural irregularity or weave already has visual interest. The goal is dimension, not decoration for decoration’s sake.

Don’t forget about the bottom half

What you wear below the kurta can completely alter its proportions. A traditional churidar creates a close, elongated line, while a straight-cut pyjama feels more relaxed and contemporary. Tapered trousers can sharpen the look further, particularly with a shorter or more minimal kurta. The key is balance: if the upper half is voluminous or intricately detailed, keep the lower half clean and streamlined. A tonal combination will create a longer visual line, while subtle contrast can introduce definition without cutting the body in half. White, straight cut trousers with a sharp crease look good with almost everything.

Layering makes all the difference

A well-tailored Nehru jacket or bandhgala can elevate your kurta to another level. Look for clean armholes, a structured but not restrictive shoulder and a length that complements the kurta beneath it. For an evening function, a richly textured jacket can become the focal point of the outfit. Add a similarly hued shawl if you’re feeling adventurous. During the day, however, a lighter waistcoat—or no layer at all—often feels more modern. If both the kurta and jacket are competing for attention, one of them probably needs to go.
