Brad Pitt went down a serious rabbit hole to find this super rare watch

Movie stars have a lot of latitude to wear whatever watch they please, especially movie stars like Brad Pitt. This could mean staying right at the edge of the zeitgeist, wearing watches that have just come out or aren’t even out yet. It could mean wearing the most high-spec Richard Mille, or most complicated Patek Philippe, or most iced-out Jacob & Co.

Or it could mean something quite different: wearing a niche vintage watch that only the real heads will know is vanishingly rare. That’s the route Pitt has been going down, with some panache. The Patek Calatrava he’s had on recently looks, at first glance, like any nice old Calatrava. But if you’ve got the requisite watch lore, the sight of it will send you absolutely crazy.

This is a reference 2526 Calatrava, according to Justin Gruenberg, of vintage watch dealership The Keystone. The 2526 was introduced in the 1950s and “is the first self-winding Patek model”, he says. “This is one of the most rare variations of that.” It’s in white gold, of which only about 25 were made. And only a bare handful of those were made with diamonds at three, six, nine and 12 o’clock, like this one.

So: an extremely rare watch, but not one that brags too hard about that rarity. It has a nicely aged dial, and is on a robust-looking metal bracelet. Brad Pitt “tends to wear bracelet watches”, says Gruenberg. “I rarely see him wearing something on a leather strap.” This is a guy with a very specific taste – Pitt has a few other 2526s with aged dials. “He does the research,” says Gruenberg. “Has very strong opinions; doesn’t care whether people are into it or not. I don’t know how he finds the time.”

Maybe Pitt is blowing the dust off old Patek catalogues in his trailer between takes. Either way, it speaks to how the top tier of celebrity watch-wearing has ascended far beyond the obvious hype-y flexes, and is instead revolving around niche vintage and indie pieces. You’ve got Ryan Reynolds wearing Roger Smith, Timothée Chalamet wearing back-catalogue Franck Muller and signing a creative partnership with Urban Jürgensen; Russell Crowe wearing the very indie Brit brand William Wood; and even footballers like Hugo Ekitike going in for some retro AP goodness.

“These aren’t guys who are trying to show off in the sense of wearing something flashy,” says Gruenberg. (After all, none of their peers would be particularly impressed if they were.) “I think they’re really after something that’s personal to them; an if-you-know-you-know type of watch. In the case of Brad, I feel he has an inner circle of friends that are into similar things. These guys are buying one-of-a-kind or a-few-pieces-known type things, and they really go down the rabbit hole. They are a new type of celebrity collector.”

There you have it: the new celebrity watch flex is an anti-flex. You thought these stars were spending all their time at Hollywood parties and guzzling champagne on yachts? Nope – they’re in Reddit and Instagram’s horological trenches with the rest of us. Next time you’re arguing with an anonymous account about ’70s Rolex reference numbers, there could be an A-lister at the other end.
