Nick Woltemade accepts that his first season at Newcastle United fell short of expectations, yet remains calm about the future. The forward feels performances since the winter period have not matched his early impact. However, Woltemade is convinced that the overall experience in England will help deliver stronger campaigns on Tyneside.
Woltemade joined Newcastle from Stuttgart for a reported club-record fee of 65m (75m). The move placed immediate pressure on the Germany international to deliver goals in the Premier League. He adjusted quickly under Eddie Howe and appeared set for a prolific year, which increased external and personal demands on consistency.

The striker became the fifth player to hit at least four goals in the first five Premier League games for Newcastle. That group features Les Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Loic Remy and Callum Wilson. Woltemade was the first to reach that mark since Wilson achieved four goals from five appearances in October 2020.
Despite that strong beginning, the rest of the 2025-26 campaign proved challenging. Across all competitions, Woltemade recorded 11 goals and four assists from 51 matches. Howe often used Woltemade away from the central striker role, with 10 outings coming from attacking midfield. The positional switch left Woltemade fighting for influence in advanced areas.
“I’m expected to score or provide an assist in every game,” Woltemade told Stern, as quoted by Fussball Transfers. “But if I’m not playing in attack, it’s much more difficult for me to get into dangerous scoring positions. I’m not happy with how things have gone in the past few months. Especially since my start at Newcastle was so strong. That raised expectations, including for myself.”

Form issues at club level did not stop Julian Nagelsmann from calling Woltemade into Germany’s 26-player World Cup squad. During the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Woltemade contributed to more goals than any team-mate. The forward scored four times from four shots on target and supplied one assist for the national side.
The 24-year-old believes that a productive World Cup in North America can energise the next Newcastle season at St. James’ Park. Experience against varied international defences should add to the tactical lessons learned in England. Woltemade sees the tournament as a chance to reset confidence and return to club duty sharper.
“I moved to the Premier League at 23, the best league in the world,” Woltemade added. “I’ve learned a lot this season. I’ve improved athletically, I can keep up with the tremendous pace. I can hold my own in challenges. Overall, it’s been a step forward. That’s why I have no doubts about Newcastle. I’ll make my mark there.”
