For many aspiring cricketers, the dream begins in childhood and follows a structured path through academies, age-group tournaments and state teams. Abhishek Singhal’s story, however, is different.
The Delhi-based cricketer took a less conventional route to the game, completing both a B.Tech and an MBA before deciding to pursue cricket seriously. Today, he finds himself competing in Big Cricket League (BCL) Season 2, sharing the field with cricket legends and earning one of the tournament’s coveted Golden Buzzers.
His journey is a reminder that there is no single pathway to success and that opportunities can arrive when least expected.
An Unexpected Route to BCL
Singhal’s entry into the Big Cricket League came through a chance encounter. While playing in a tournament in Delhi, he caught the attention of BCL founder RP Singh, who happened to be watching the match. Impressed by his performance, Singh introduced him to the league and encouraged him to attend the trials.
“I was playing in a tournament in Delhi when RP sir was watching the match. He asked me where I usually played, and then told me about the league. I came for the trials, gave my best and got selected,” Singhal recalled while speaking to myKhel.
What followed was an opportunity to compete on a bigger stage alongside some of the most recognisable names in the game.
The Golden Buzzer Moment
One of the highlights of Singhal’s BCL campaign has been winning a Golden Buzzer, an achievement reserved for standout performers.
While delighted with the recognition, he views it as just one milestone in a much bigger journey.
“It feels good because not everyone gets it. Most players don’t. But the key is to stay persistent and consistent. There is another Golden Buzzer to achieve and that is what I am aiming for now,” he said.
His hunger for improvement reflects a mindset that has helped him progress rapidly in a relatively short period.
Interestingly, he came agonisingly close to securing a Platinum Buzzer in his very first match.
“I missed it by just three runs. At that time, I didn’t really know much about the buzzer system. I was just playing my natural game. Now I know how it works, so I will definitely try to achieve it in the future,” he added.
Learning From Cricket Legends
One of the biggest attractions of BCL Season 2 is the opportunity for emerging players to interact with established stars.
For Singhal, sharing the field with players such as Chris Gayle has been an invaluable learning experience.
“It is a great experience. You gain a lot of knowledge from the senior players. They are very helpful in the dugout and always willing to guide younger cricketers,” he said.
The exposure has allowed him to understand the professionalism, preparation and mindset required to succeed at the highest level.
A Late Start, But No Regrets
Unlike many professional cricketers who begin structured training during their childhood, Singhal only started taking cricket seriously after completing his education.
Having finished his B.Tech and MBA, he initially played corporate cricket before deciding to pursue the sport more seriously.
“I always liked cricket, but I started playing professionally much later. I completed my B.Tech and MBA first. After that, I began playing corporate cricket. I was around 24 years old when I started playing professionally,” he explained.
The decision proved to be a turning point.
Within just two years, he found himself competing in several major tournaments across Delhi and other parts of India.
Looking back, Singhal has no regrets about taking the unconventional route.
Instead, he sees it as proof that determination and hard work can help players make up for lost time.
The Importance of Family Support
Every sporting journey requires a support system, and Singhal has been fortunate to have one.
While his family never pressured him into choosing a particular path, they always encouraged him to pursue what made him happy.
“My family never stopped me from playing cricket. They have always been supportive. Their attitude has always been simple – do whatever you want to do, but give it your best,” he said.
That freedom allowed him to make his own decisions and pursue cricket on his own terms.
Chasing the Next Goal
For Abhishek Singhal, the Golden Buzzer is not the destination. It is simply another step forward.
From completing a B.Tech and MBA to making his mark in BCL Season 2, his story demonstrates the value of persistence, patience and self-belief.
His rise also serves as an important reminder that dreams do not come with age limits. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity, the courage to take it and the determination to keep moving forward.
As BCL Season 2 continues, Singhal will be hoping to add a Platinum Buzzer to his growing list of achievements.
If his journey so far is any indication, he is unlikely to stop chasing bigger goals anytime soon.
