Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka brought the curtain down on his illustrious 24-year professional tennis career after suffering a first-round defeat at the Basel Open on Tuesday. The 41-year-old Swiss star lost 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) to Czech player Jiri Lehecka, marking the end of an era for one of tennis’s most celebrated competitors.
Wawrinka had announced earlier this season that the ATP 500 tournament in his home country would be his final professional event. The former world number three leaves the sport with three major titles and a legacy built on his powerful one-handed backhand and ability to challenge the biggest names in tennis.

During an era dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Wawrinka, alongside Andy Murray, stood out as one of the few players capable of winning multiple Grand Slam titles.
“I was lucky enough to be able to play alongside them and sometimes beat them,” the tennis star said.
The Swiss star famously defeated Nadal to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014. He followed that triumph by beating Djokovic in the French Open final in 2015 before defeating the Serbian again in the US Open final in 2016.
Wawrinka also enjoyed success representing Switzerland alongside compatriot Federer, winning the Davis Cup and claiming men’s doubles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Wawrinka Receives Emotional Farewell in Basel
Playing in front of his home crowd, Wawrinka received loud cheers for every point he won, with his trademark backhands drawing particularly enthusiastic reactions from the stands.
However, Lehecka seized the initiative by breaking Wawrinka’s serve in the 11th game of the opening set before closing it out with an ace. The second set remained closely contested and went into a tie-break, where the Czech player took control to secure victory.
Following the match, Wawrinka completed a lap of the court to thank the supporters before walking off for the final time as a professional player. He had already received a farewell ceremony in Basel on Monday.
“He won the biggest tournaments, so for me to be here in his moment is a little bit weird,” Lehecka told Sky Sports.
“But at the same time, it’s a pleasure and I will never forget this match.”
Wawrinka to Reunite With Federer & Murray for Farewell Event
Although his professional career has ended, fans will get another opportunity to celebrate Wawrinka later this year. The Swiss announced in June that he would host a farewell event titled “One last backhand” in Geneva on December 19, with Federer and Murray also scheduled to participate.
Meanwhile, the Basel Open continued with several notable results. Second seed Arthur Fils defeated fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 to reach the round of 16, while Spanish third seed Rafael Jodar advanced with a straight-sets victory over Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.
Top seed Ben Shelton survived a tough encounter against American compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic, winning 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4).
Djokovic, who trained with Wawrinka ahead of the tournament on Sunday, is scheduled to begin his campaign against France’s Ugo Humbert on Wednesday.
