The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long been regarded as a batter’s paradise. Over the years, fans have witnessed hundreds, double hundreds, 250-plus team totals and batting records tumbling with remarkable frequency. Yet amid all the sixes and run-fests, one bowling record has remained stubbornly out of reach.

In 19 seasons of the IPL, featuring hundreds of matches and some of the greatest bowlers in T20 history, only two players have managed to take six wickets in an innings.

The exclusive club comprises just two names – Sohail Tanvir and Alzarri Joseph.

Even as bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine, Rashid Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have dominated different eras of the competition, none have been able to match what Tanvir achieved in 2008 and Joseph repeated 11 years later.

Sohail Tanvir Set the Benchmark in IPL’s Inaugural Season

The first six-wicket haul in IPL history arrived during the tournament’s maiden edition in 2008.

Representing Rajasthan Royals under Shane Warne’s leadership, Pakistani left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir produced a devastating spell of 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur.

At the time, the performance was unprecedented in T20 cricket.

Tanvir dismantled a powerful CSK batting lineup and played a key role in Rajasthan Royals’ remarkable title-winning campaign. His figures remained the benchmark for IPL bowlers for more than a decade.

As seasons passed and batting standards continued to rise, many believed the record would never be broken.

Alzarri Joseph Rewrites History on IPL Debut

Eleven years later, another fast bowler stunned the cricketing world.

In 2019, Mumbai Indians handed West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph his IPL debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Few could have imagined what followed.

Joseph ripped through the SRH batting lineup, finishing with extraordinary figures of 6/12 in 3.4 overs. Not only did he surpass Tanvir’s long-standing record, but he also registered the best bowling figures in IPL history.

The achievement became even more remarkable considering it came in his very first IPL appearance.

Seven years later, Joseph’s record remains untouched.

Why Is a Six-Wicket Haul So Difficult in T20 Cricket?

Unlike longer formats, bowlers in T20 cricket are restricted to just four overs.

That limitation significantly reduces their chances of taking multiple wickets.

Several factors make a six-wicket haul particularly difficult:

• Bowlers have a maximum of 24 deliveries to work with.
• Batters attack aggressively from the first ball.
• Modern batting lineups are deeper than ever.
• Multiple bowlers often share wickets.
• Teams frequently get bowled out before one bowler can claim six dismissals.

The introduction of the Impact Player rule has made batting units even stronger, making Joseph’s record appear increasingly untouchable.

Many Have Reached Five, But Nobody Has Reached Six

While six-wicket hauls remain rare, five-wicket performances have become slightly more common.

Anil Kumble’s legendary 5/5 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Rajasthan Royals in 2009 remains one of the most economical spells in IPL history.

Akash Madhwal’s sensational 5/5 against Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 Eliminator ranks among the greatest playoff performances ever.

Jasprit Bumrah’s 5/10 against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mark Wood’s 5/14 for Lucknow Super Giants and Mohsin Khan’s 5/23 against KKR in IPL 2026 all showcased elite bowling quality.

Yet despite these extraordinary efforts, none managed to cross the final hurdle and join the exclusive six-wicket club.

Could the Record Ever Be Broken?

The IPL continues to produce exceptional bowlers.

Bumrah remains arguably the world’s premier T20 pacer. Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Mayank Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and several others have shown the ability to run through batting lineups.

But history suggests breaking Joseph’s record will require something special.

Not only must a bowler produce a near-perfect spell, but circumstances must also align perfectly.

A collapse, favourable conditions and impeccable execution are all required.

That combination has occurred only twice in IPL history.

The IPL’s Most Exclusive Club

The IPL has witnessed countless batting milestones and bowling achievements since 2008.

Yet when it comes to six-wicket hauls, the list remains remarkably short.
