Ahead of World Music Day, singer-songwriter Jai Dhir, known for tracks such as Leja, Mirza, Taj, Dori and Snap, opens up about the journey that brought him to where he is today, a journey shaped by uncertainty, resilience, and an unwavering belief in music. With a growing catalogue of songs that have resonated with listeners across the country, Jai Dhir says his relationship with music began long before recognition, at a time when it became his biggest source of strength.
Long before songs like Leja, Mirza and Taj found their audience, Jai Dhir was a teenager teaching dance to children while trying to figure out his future. Growing up in a challenging environment, he found himself drawn to creative spaces where he felt a sense of belonging. What started with dance eventually led him to songwriting and music creation, opening a world he never knew existed.
“I ran away from home with just ₹200 and a one-year deadline to make something of myself. Music was the only thing I truly believed in at the time. Looking back, that decision changed everything,” shares Jai Dhir.
His journey was far from easy. From working odd jobs and living with fellow musicians to sleeping inside studios and teaching himself music production through YouTube during lockdown, Jai Dhir spent years building his craft behind the scenes. By day, he worked on devotional and regional music projects; by night, he focused on creating music of his own.
As opportunities slowly began to emerge, Jai Dhir’s work caught the attention of Lost Stories, the electronic music duo known for their distinctive sound. The collaboration became an important milestone in his journey, leading to the creation of tracks like Mirza and eventually Leja.
For Jai Dhir, however, the success of Leja is only one chapter of a much larger story.
“Before music became my career, it was my escape. Every major turning point in my life, from leaving home to finding my voice as an artist was guided by music. On World Music Day, I’m grateful for an art form that gave me purpose when I needed it most.”
