Rishabh Pant Back to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027? Why Reunion Could Make Sense for Both Sides

Rishabh Pant Back to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027? Why Reunion Could Make Sense for Both Sides

Just days after stepping down as Lucknow Super Giants captain following a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, Rishabh Pant’s future has once again become one of the biggest talking points in the IPL ecosystem.

The India wicketkeeper-batter, who became the most expensive player in IPL history when Lucknow Super Giants acquired him for ₹27 crore at the 2025 mega auction, is now reportedly considering a move away from the franchise altogether.

Rishabh Pant Back to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027? Why Reunion Could Make Sense for Both Sides

Reports suggest Pant’s association with the Lucknow-based outfit could be nearing its end, with a sensational return to Delhi Capitals emerging as a realistic possibility.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, a number of developments across both franchises have made the prospect increasingly intriguing.

A Failed Experiment at Lucknow

When LSG broke the bank to sign Pant, they were investing not just in a marquee player but in a long-term leader.

The move was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era. Instead, the results never arrived.

Lucknow failed to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons under Pant’s leadership and endured a nightmare IPL 2026 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table. Amid mounting pressure and criticism, Pant requested to step down as captain, with the franchise accepting the decision.

“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it,” LSG director Tom Moody said in a statement earlier this month.

The resignation felt less like a standalone decision and more like the beginning of a larger reset.

Why Delhi Capitals Suddenly Enter the Picture

For Delhi Capitals, the timing couldn’t be more interesting. The franchise is set to undergo a leadership transition behind the scenes. With the ownership rotation agreement between GMR and JSW, reports indicate that Sourav Ganguly is expected to return to as the Director of Cricket or Head Coach role in the franchise’s cricket operations ahead of IPL 2027.

At the same time, there are reports linking Yuvraj Singh with a coaching role at Delhi Capitals. Both names matter when discussing Pant.

Few administrators have backed Pant as strongly as Ganguly. During Pant’s early years with Delhi Capitals and Team India, Ganguly was one of his biggest supporters, repeatedly advocating patience and faith in the wicketkeeper-batter’s talent.

Similarly, Pant has often spoken about his admiration for Yuvraj Singh, who has mentored several young Indian cricketers over the years.

A setup featuring Ganguly and Yuvraj could represent the ideal environment for Pant to rediscover his best cricket.

The Leadership Vacuum at Delhi

The other factor is captaincy. Delhi Capitals handed the leadership responsibilities to Axar Patel, but the franchise has endured two underwhelming seasons and is still searching for a formula that can consistently challenge for the title.

While Axar remains a valuable player, IPL teams are rarely hesitant to revisit leadership structures when results don’t match expectations.

Pant, despite his struggles at Lucknow, remains one of the few Indian players with proven IPL captaincy experience and a deep understanding of Delhi’s culture and dressing room.

More importantly, he remains closely connected with the franchise’s fan base.

For many Delhi supporters, Pant never truly stopped being the face of the team.

A Homecoming Story Waiting to Happen?

Pant’s history with Delhi Capitals runs deep. He joined the franchise as a teenager, developed into one of the most destructive batters in the league and eventually captained the side. Under his leadership, Delhi reached the IPL 2021 playoffs, in the absence of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer due to injury, and established themselves as regular contenders.

Even after his departure to Lucknow, the emotional connection between player and franchise remained intact.

A return would not simply be a transfer.

It would be the reunion of a player with the franchise where he became a star.

Why the Move Makes Sense for Both Parties

From Pant’s perspective, a move back to Delhi offers familiarity, trust and an environment where he has historically produced his best cricket.

For Delhi Capitals, the acquisition would provide a proven match-winner, a marquee Indian star and potentially a captain capable of leading the franchise into its next phase.

There are still several hurdles before any deal can materialise. Lucknow Super Giants would need to make a definitive call on Pant’s future, while Delhi would have to assess its leadership plans and auction strategy.

But in a league where narratives often become reality, the possibility of Rishabh Pant returning to Delhi Capitals is no longer a far-fetched fantasy.

After two turbulent years in Lucknow, IPL 2027 could just witness one of the most significant homecomings in the tournament’s history.
