Sree Charani Becomes ICC World No.1 T20I Bowler, Indian Batters Also Gain Ground

India’s rising spin sensation Sree Charani has reached a major career milestone, climbing to the No.1 spot in the latest ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings following her sensational performances at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The 21-year-old left-arm spinner dethroned England’s Linsey Smith to become the world’s top-ranked T20I bowler, capping a remarkable rise that has seen her emerge as one of the standout performers of the ongoing tournament.

Charani’s ascent comes on the back of a stunning start to the World Cup, where she currently leads the wicket-taking charts with 10 wickets from just three matches.

World Cup Heroics Propel Charani to the Top

Charani has been one of India’s brightest performers during the tournament, consistently troubling batters with her accuracy, flight and ability to extract turn.

Her standout performance came against the Netherlands in Leeds, where she registered figures of 4/19 to help India secure a dominant victory. The left-armer followed that up with another impressive display against South Africa in Manchester, claiming three wickets despite India’s defeat.

Those performances were enough to propel Charani to the summit of the ICC rankings, less than 15 months after making her international debut.

The achievement is particularly remarkable given her relative inexperience at the highest level. Having only broken into the Indian setup in 2025, Charani has rapidly established herself as a key member of the national side.

A Meteoric Rise

The latest rankings update underlines just how quickly Charani has adapted to international cricket.

From being a promising domestic talent to becoming the world’s top-ranked T20I bowler in little over a year, the youngster’s rise has been one of the biggest success stories in Indian women’s cricket.

Her ability to consistently pick up wickets in the middle overs has made her a crucial weapon for India during the World Cup campaign.

With 10 wickets in three matches, she currently sits comfortably atop the tournament’s wicket-taking charts and has played a major role in keeping India in contention.

England Spinners Close Behind

While Charani moved to the top, England continue to dominate the upper reaches of the bowling rankings.

Charlie Dean climbed to second place after collecting five wickets in three matches at the World Cup, while former No.1 Linsey Smith slipped to third following a relatively quiet start to the tournament.

Former world No.1 Sophie Ecclestone also made gains, moving up four places to fourth in the rankings after a strong start to England’s campaign.

Elsewhere, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews climbed nine places to 11th, while Australia’s Kim Garth jumped 25 positions to enter the top 20.

Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana and Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast also made significant gains following impressive performances at the World Cup.

Indian Batters Also Gain Ground

While Charani grabbed the headlines, there was good news for India’s batters as well.

Shafali Verma moved up one place to sixth in the ICC Women’s T20I Batting Rankings, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur climbed one spot to break into the top 10.

Australia opener Georgia Voll retained her position as the world’s No.1 T20I batter despite a modest return of 62 runs from three innings during the World Cup.

Beth Mooney remains her closest challenger, while New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty and Ireland’s Orla Prendergast were among the other players to make gains.

Hayley Matthews Retains All-Round Crown

There was no change at the top of the ICC Women’s T20I All-Rounder Rankings, with Hayley Matthews continuing to hold the No.1 position ahead of New Zealand star Melie Kerr.

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu moved up to third, while Prendergast and Fatima Sana also climbed within the top 10.

South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp was another notable mover after her Player of the Match performance against India, rising five places to ninth overall.
