Bosnia-Herzegovina Underdogs Eye World Cup Progress, Barbarez Says

Bosnia kept World Cup hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over Qatar at Seattle Stadium, securing third place in the group behind Canada and Switzerland. The result moved Bosnia close to a first-ever appearance in the last 32, and Sergej Barbarez welcomed the chance to continue as underdogs on the global stage.

The match turned Bosnia’s campaign around after a seven-game winless streak. Kerim Alajbegovic struck first with a powerful 29th-minute effort, becoming Bosnia’s leading scorer at this World Cup with two goals, despite not starting any match. Mahmoud Abunada then diverted the ball into Qatar’s net, before Hassan Al Haydos replied and Ermin Mahmic finished the contest late on.

Barbarez watched Bosnia reach the finals by beating both Wales and Italy in qualifying, and now sees belief growing. The coach stressed how the squad embrace their outsider role in North America. We came here as complete underdogs, Barbarez told reporters. We’re trying to do something big and major, and this is now something that has come true.

The coach highlighted Bosnia’s mix of emerging talent and experienced leaders, which stood out against Qatar. Alajbegovic, aged 18 years and 276 days, became the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history, and did so without starting a game. Barbarez expects more from this generation. We have a lot of young players, and I truly do believe that this national team has just begun, and that the next World Cup will be their true World Cup, Barbarez added.

The landmark night also belonged to Edin Dzeko, who extended Bosnia’s appearance record with cap number 150. The forward played at a World Cup for the fifth time, equalling Sead Kolasinac for the Dragons. Bosnia now expect to face co-hosts United States at Levi’s Stadium, and Barbarez remained relaxed. I think we are confident enough to face anyone, the Bosnia boss said.

Despite elimination, Qatar created openings that could have changed the narrative. After Al Haydos reduced the deficit before half-time, Pedro Miguel struck the woodwork, while Akram Afif fired into the side-netting. Qatar still could not find a first World Cup win, leaving the team stuck on six games without victory, behind Honduras on nine and New Zealand on eight.

Julen Lopetegui focused on positives for Qatar, pointing to the squad’s progress and the lessons for younger players. This last matchallowed us to take one step ahead in Qatar football, Qatar history, Lopetegui said. I think that they showed that at least we were able to compete in these kinds of matches. I don’t know if this will be or not the last match for some of them but the young players, they have to learn and take this example for the future, to be able to have other possibilities in historyI don’t know when it’s going to happen.
