Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s possible India debut on the England tour has quickly become one of the biggest talking points around the five-match T20I series. The teenage left-hander arrives with rare hype after a stunning IPL season for Rajasthan Royals, but the stronger story is not just his age. It is the unusual confidence and power that have convinced senior cricket voices that he may already be ready for the next level.

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has worked closely with the youngster as Rajasthan Royals coach, believes Sooryavanshi has the temperament to cope with the attention. Speaking on JioStar, Sangakkara said the batter’s rise has not surprised those who first watched him in the Royals setup. His assessment was clear: Sooryavanshi could become “a force for Indian cricket, world cricket, and in franchise cricket”.

How Rajasthan Royals spotted Vaibhav Sooryavanshi early

Sangakkara recalled that Rajasthan Royals first heard about Sooryavanshi in 2023 through analyst Akshay, who alerted the team to a 12-year-old batter with unusual ability. The initial reaction inside the franchise was disbelief, but the recommendation was strong enough for the Royals to take a closer look. Rahul Dravid, then part of the RR coaching setup, was among those who watched him.

“In 2023, our analyst Akshay sent us a text about a 12-year-old kid named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He said the boy was incredibly talented and we needed to have a look,” Sangakkara said on JioStar. He added that the coaching group needed only a few minutes before reaching a decision: “We have to buy this lad.”

The moment that stayed with Sangakkara came at a Royals camp in Guwahati. Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma were bowling with the new ball in a side net, and senior players were reluctant to face that challenge. Sooryavanshi, still in his early teens, volunteered to bat. Sangakkara said the sound off his bat was “like a gunshot” as he took on both bowlers without hesitation.

That story explains why the excitement around him is different from ordinary age-group promise. India have seen several young players dominate junior cricket before struggling with senior pace, match pressure and scrutiny. Sooryavanshi’s appeal lies in how quickly he has carried the same attacking method into tougher environments, including franchise cricket against international bowlers.

Why Sooryavanshi’s confidence has caught attention

Sangakkara also shared an example from the IPL season that showed the teenager’s belief. Before a chase against Lucknow Super Giants, Sooryavanshi reportedly told the coach not to worry and claimed he would hit 13 sixes. He finished with 10. For most young players, such a statement would sound reckless. In his case, it reflected the way he sees the game.

“That’s the kind of confidence Vaibhav has at just 15 years of age,” Sangakkara said on JioStar. The important detail is not merely the number of sixes. It is that teammates initially treated the claim as a joke, then began counting as he moved closer to it. That level of self-belief can be a gift, provided it is managed carefully.

India’s selectors have often been cautious with teenage talents, particularly batters, because early exposure can bring intense public judgement. Sooryavanshi’s case will test that balance. If he debuts in England, he will face not only high-quality bowling but also conditions where movement, pace variation and field placement can expose young shot-makers. The T20 format, however, also rewards fearless starts.

Sangakkara believes the Royals have been careful in protecting him from the noise around his name. He said the franchise keeps him grounded and focused, while also recognising that fame and commercial attention will follow. The former captain stressed that Sooryavanshi’s love for batting remains his central trait, and that the teenager has interests beyond cricket.

Dinesh Karthik explains what makes him hard to bowl to

Dinesh Karthik, also speaking on JioStar, said Sooryavanshi has kept clearing every challenge placed before him. He pointed to his progression through age-group cricket, knockout matches and then the IPL, where the batter showed he could influence big games. Karthik compared the need to preserve his natural bat swing with the way coaches avoid tampering with Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling action.

“Every test you can put in front of him, he has passed with flying colours,” Karthik said. He praised Sooryavanshi’s backlift and warned that future coaches should not overcorrect a method that is already working. That is a key point for a young power-hitter. Technical refinement may be needed, but stripping away instinct can reduce the quality that made him special.

Karthik also explained why bowlers have found him so difficult to contain. Before facing Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru discussed possible plans, including yorkers and well-directed bouncers. According to Karthik, those options did not work in Guwahati, where experienced bowlers such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood could not impose control.

The reason, Karthik said, is Sooryavanshi’s base, strength and range. He stands firm, hits hard through the off-side and uses the powerplay field cleverly. With only two fielders outside the circle, even slight errors become costly. Crucially, Karthik said he is not one-dimensional, because he can rotate strike when the ball is not in his hitting zone.

For India, the decision will come down to role clarity. If Sooryavanshi plays, he is unlikely to be picked for caution. His value lies in changing the tempo early and forcing bowlers away from their plans. England, in home conditions, would be a demanding first assignment, but it would also provide the clearest view of how far his game has travelled.

The hype around Sooryavanshi will only grow if he receives his first India cap during the tour. For now, the most encouraging sign is that those who have watched him closely are speaking less about potential and more about readiness.
