IND vs ENG 3rd T20I: England bowlers took just 11.4 overs to hand over a clueless Team India their worst-ever defeat in the T20Is and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
In one of their most humiliating batting performances, India were bundled out for just 76 runs to register a massive 125-run defeat at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday (July 7).

Team India Humbled in Nottingham T20I
It was also the second lowest score for the Men in Blue as the English pace duo of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue ripped through a much-vaunted Indian batting line-up.
Set a daunting target of 202 after England posted 201 for seven, India were expected to produce a strong response on a batting-friendly surface. Instead, what followed was a batting collapse of epic proportions.
The Men in Blue were bundled out for a paltry 76 in just 11.4 overs as England’s bowlers tore through the Indian batting order. Archer returned with impressive figures of three for 29 from three overs, while Josh Tongue was England’s most successful bowler with four wickets for 28 runs. Archer’s three wickets inside the powerplay ensured he bagged the player of the match award.
The scale of India’s defeat was staggering. The 76-run total was India’s second-lowest score in T20I cricket, while the 125-run margin was their biggest defeat in the format.
The loss also extended India’s winless streak to five matches for the first time and left Shreyas Iyer’s men 0-2 down in the five-match series with only two games remaining.
Shreyas Iyer’s Decision to Bowl First Backfires
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, but the decision did not produce the desired result.
England’s batters took full advantage of the conditions at Trent Bridge and posted an imposing 201 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.
Phil Salt led England’s charge with a brilliant 70 off 44 deliveries. The explosive opener struck seven fours and three sixes during his innings and ensured the hosts had the platform required to post a massive total.
Salt received early support from Jos Buttler, who scored a quickfire 36 off 21 balls. The pair added 43 runs for the opening wicket before Prince Yadav provided India with their first breakthrough by dismissing Buttler.
England captain Harry Brook contributed 16 off 12 balls, while Jacob Bethell scored 13 off nine.
Indian bowlers briefly fought their way back into the contest when England slipped from 111 for two to 111 for four in consecutive deliveries. Harshit Rana dismissed Bethell before removing Tom Banton for a golden duck.
However, India failed to capitalise on the opening, their fielding and bowling didn’t live up to the expectation in the must-win game to stay in contention for the series.
Phil Salt, Sam Curran Power England Past 200
Salt continued his assault on the Indian bowlers before eventually being dismissed by Axar Patel for 70.
But Sam Curran ensured England did not lose momentum during the closing stages of the innings. The all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 41 off just 24 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and scoring at a strike rate of 170.83.
Will Jacks added further impetus with 14 off seven balls, including two sixes, as England crossed the 200-run mark. The hosts eventually finished with 201 for seven, setting up a record run chase for the visitors.
Prince Yadav was the most economical of India’s frontline bowlers, returning two for 30 from four overs, while Harshit Rana picked up two wickets for 40 runs. Axar Patel had a difficult outing despite dismissing Salt, conceding 49 runs from his four overs.
Varun Chakaravarthy also went wicketless and conceded 35 runs from three overs.
India were left needing 202 to win, a target that would have required their biggest successful run chase in T20I cricket. What followed, however, was a complete capitulation.
Archer-Tongue Destroy India’s Top Order
India’s much-vaunted batting line-up collapsed almost immediately under pressure from England’s fast bowlers. Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi started aggressively, taking India to 23 in less than two overs. But the wickets soon started tumbling.
Josh Tongue provided England with the first breakthrough by dismissing Abhishek for 10 off seven balls.
Sooryavanshi, playing only his second international match, smashed two sixes during his five-ball 13 but was dismissed by Archer in the following over.
The England pacer used the short ball to good effect as Sooryavanshi attempted the pull shot and could only glove the ball through to Jos Buttler. India were 29 for two.
Things rapidly went from bad to worse.
India Lose Five Wickets Inside Powerplay for First Time
Tongue dismissed Ishan Kishan for 13 off nine deliveries on the final ball of the fourth over. Archer then struck with the very next delivery. India captain Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for five off four balls, leaving the visitors reeling at 41 for four.
Axar Patel attempted to counterattack and scored 10 off four deliveries, including a four and a six. But Archer had the final word.
The right-arm pacer dismissed Axar on the final delivery of the fifth over to complete a devastating three-wicket burst. Soon, India had slumped to 52 for five.
It was the first time in India’s T20I history that they had lost their first five wickets within the opening six overs of an innings. The contest was effectively over.
Archer had ripped the heart out of the Indian batting order, finishing his three-over spell with figures of three for 29.
No Indian Batter Crosses 15 as Collapse Continued
India needed something extraordinary from their middle and lower order to even make the defeat respectable. But the resistance never arrived. Tilak Varma struggled to get going and scored just three runs from 11 deliveries before being stumped by Buttler off Will Jacks.
Shivam Dube was the next to depart, becoming Tongue’s third victim after scoring two off four balls. At 63 for seven, India were in danger of recording their lowest-ever T20I total.
Arshdeep Singh scored four before Adil Rashid dismissed him, while Harshit Rana battled for 13 deliveries for his nine runs. Tongue dismissed Rana to complete an outstanding four-wicket haul.
Varun Chakaravarthy struck one boundary in his five before Rashid bowled him to bring an end to one of India’s worst-ever batting performances.
The innings lasted just 11.4 overs. India were all out for 76. Remarkably, not a single Indian batter managed to score more than 13 runs.
Sooryavanshi and Kishan were the joint-highest scorers with 13 each.
Josh Tongue Claims Four as England Complete Demolition Job
While Archer inflicted the early damage, Tongue finished as England’s leading wicket-taker. The right-arm pacer returned figures of four for 28 from his four overs, dismissing Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana.
Archer’s three wickets came inside the powerplay as he removed Sooryavanshi, Shreyas and Axar. The two England pacers combined to pick up seven of India’s 10 wickets.
Jacks and , then, Rashid completed the demolition. Jacks conceded just five runs from his two overs and dismissed Tilak, while Rashid picked up the final two wickets to finish with two for 14.
England’s bowlers did not concede a single extra during the entire Indian innings, further underlining the discipline with which the hosts defended their imposing total.
India Register Second-Lowest T20I Total
The defeat earned India an unwanted place in the record books. Their 76 was the second-lowest total in the team’s T20I history.
More worryingly, the collapse came from a batting unit packed with players renowned for their aggressive strokeplay.
Abhishek, Sooryavanshi, Kishan, Shreyas, Tilak, Axar and Dube were all back in the pavilion before India had even reached 65. Five of them failed to reach double figures.
India’s aggressive batting philosophy spectacularly backfired as the batters continued to play attacking shots despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
There was no partnership to stabilise the innings and no batter capable of absorbing the pressure applied by England’s bowlers.
India’s biggest partnership of the innings was the 23-run opening stand between Abhishek and Sooryavanshi.
No subsequent partnership reached double figures apart from the 12 runs added by Kishan and Shreyas for the third wicket and the 11-run fifth-wicket stand between Axar and Tilak.
England did not merely defeat the world champions. They completely outplayed them with both bat and ball. The defeat also extended India’s winless streak to five consecutive T20Is for the first time.
It is an alarming sequence for the world champions, particularly given the quality and depth available in Indian cricket. India now trail the five-match series 0-2 with two games remaining.
The equation is straightforward but daunting. Shreyas Iyer’s men must win both remaining matches to avoid a series defeat and finish the contest level at 2-2.
