David Warner Pleads Guilty to Drunk-Driving Charge, Sentencing Set for August

Former Australia opener David Warner has pleaded guilty to a mid-range drunk-driving offence in Australia and is set to be sentenced next month after admitting the charge in court.

The 39-year-old was not required to appear in Sydney’s Waverley Local Court, where his lawyer entered the guilty plea on his behalf.

Why was David Warner charged?

According to court proceedings, Warner was stopped by police during a roadside alcohol test in Sydney on April 5.

He subsequently underwent a secondary breath analysis at a police station, which allegedly found his blood alcohol level to be more than twice the legal limit.

Warner pleaded guilty to one count of mid-range (middle-range) drink-driving and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 18.

David Warner admits he made a “foolish decision”

Warner’s lawyer, Bobby Hill, said the former Australia batter had accepted responsibility for his actions.

“He knows what he did was wrong.”

Hill added:

“He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber.”

Speaking during an earlier hearing, Hill also stressed the importance of accountability.

“So many of us make those poor decisions. I think what’s important is accepting and being accountable for those poor decisions.”

Could David Warner lose the Sydney Thunder captaincy?

The incident could have implications for Warner’s leadership role with **Sydney Thunder** in the Big Bash League.

Sydney Thunder, along with Sydney Sixers and New South Wales Blues, participates in New South Wales government campaigns promoting road safety and discouraging drink-driving.

Following Warner’s arrest, Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon described the allegations as serious.

“The allegations are of course concerning and we take them very seriously.”

Germon added that Warner’s future as Thunder captain would be considered at a later stage, though no decision has yet been announced.

Warner’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 18, when the court will determine the penalty for the offence.

The former Australia opener, who retired from international cricket but continues to play franchise cricket around the world, has not publicly commented beyond the statements made through his lawyer.
