KL Rahul Reveals Why IPL Captaincy Left Him ‘Mentally Drained’ After Lucknow Super Giants Stint

KL Rahul has offered a candid insight into the mental toll of leading an IPL franchise, saying the constant scrutiny from team owners left him feeling more exhausted than an entire season of international cricket.

While Rahul did not name anyone directly, his comments come more than two years after his widely-publicised fallout with Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka during the 2024 IPL season.

KL Rahul on the mental burden of IPL captaincy

Speaking about the challenges of captaining an IPL side, Rahul said the off-field demands often outweighed the cricket itself.

“What I found hardest as an IPL captain was the sheer number of meetings, reviews, and explanations required at the ownership level. It was mentally exhausting.”

He explained that every tactical decision required justification.

“By the end of an IPL season, I felt more mentally and physically drained than after playing 10 months of international cricket.”

Rahul added that captains are frequently questioned over team selection, tactics and results.

“You’re constantly being asked why you made certain decisions, why a player was picked, or why the team underperformed.”

Drawing a comparison with international cricket, Rahul said the difference lies in who players answer to.

“In international cricket, you’re answerable to coaches and selectors who understand the game’s nuances.”

He also pointed out that sport can never guarantee success despite meticulous planning.

“No matter what you do or how many boxes you tick, nothing in sport guarantees victory. That’s the hardest part to explain to people from a non-sporting background, who often expect every decision to have a guaranteed outcome.”

Why the comments have drawn attention

Rahul’s remarks have reignited discussion around his exit from Lucknow Super Giants.

During IPL 2024, cameras captured LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka in an animated on-field conversation with Rahul immediately after the franchise’s heavy defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The incident quickly went viral and sparked widespread debate over the public nature of the exchange.

Although Goenka later described Rahul as “family” and attempted to play down the controversy, Rahul was not retained by Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the next IPL cycle. He subsequently joined the Delhi Capitals.
