When Rohit Sharma walks out to open against Afghanistan on Saturday (June 13) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, he will not simply be beginning another bilateral ODI series. He will be stepping into one of the most important phases of his late-career journey.
For nearly two decades, the Mumbaikar has occupied a special place in Indian cricket as one of the highly accomplished batters in the format and being a backbone for the Men in Blue. Yet international sport rarely allows players to live on past achievements.

Rohit Sharma In Spotlight With Afghanistan Series
As India prepare for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, Rohit finds himself entering a phase of his career where every performance will be scrutinised through a different lens. This is no longer about what he has achieved for Indian cricket. It is about what he can still contribute as India build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Can Rohit Sharma still justify his place purely as a player?
Following India’s Champions Trophy triumph in Dubai in 2025 under Rohit, the selectors initiated a leadership transition by appointing Shubman Gill as the former’s successor in the ODIs. The move signalled the beginning of a new era, with Gill expected to lead India’s white-ball plans for the foreseeable future.
For Rohit, that change carries important implications. When he was captain, his value to the team extended beyond runs. Leadership, tactical awareness and dressing-room influence naturally strengthened his position in the side. Today, he is primarily being assessed as a player. His place in India’s ODI plans will increasingly depend on his performances rather than his stature or past accomplishments.
That makes the Afghanistan series particularly significant.
The Numbers Remain Strong, But Questions Persist
At first glance, Rohit’s ODI returns since the 2023 World Cup final remain impressive. The veteran opener has continued to score heavily whenever he has found rhythm. His 119 against England in Cuttack, unbeaten 121 against Australia in Sydney and 76 in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand are reminders that the ability to dominate attacks remains intact.
Across 20 ODI innings since the 2023 World Cup final, Rohit has scored 968 runs at an average above 50 while maintaining a strike rate exceeding 100. Those are numbers that most international batters would happily accept.
However, statistics can sometimes conceal broader trends. Alongside the centuries and match-winning knocks have come several low scores. Innings of 1, 2, 8, 11, 14, 15, 20, 24 and 26 suggest that consistency has become harder to maintain.
Rohit’s aggressive approach naturally carries risk, but at this stage of his career India will want greater assurance that he can deliver sustained returns rather than intermittent brilliance.
The Afghanistan series offers him an opportunity to do precisely that.
IPL 2026 Raised More Questions Than Answers
Rohit’s IPL 2026 campaign further complicated the conversation. His final tally of 283 runs from nine matches for Mumbai Indians at a strike rate of 157.22 was not disastrous. In fact, there were moments when he looked capable of producing another trademark season. Yet injuries and fitness concerns once again interrupted his progress.
For a player who now participates only in ODIs and the IPL, such interruptions inevitably attract attention.
Unlike younger players who can build rhythm across formats, Rohit’s opportunities to prove himself have become limited. Every ODI series now carries greater significance because there are fewer occasions available to demonstrate form and fitness. That reality places additional importance on the Afghanistan assignment.
Competition Is Growing
The biggest challenge facing Rohit is not necessarily Afghanistan’s bowling attack. It is the growing depth of Indian cricket.
India’s batting resources are arguably stronger than at any point in the country’s history. Gill is trying to establish himself as captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been included in the squad a replacement to Virat Kohli, will look to seal a spot. Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul will also look to push hard for opportunities.
While matching Rohit’s pedigree will be a challenge for all, but the selectors – who are preparing for a World Cup next year – cannot afford to focus solely on pedigree. They must consider future planning, continuity and long-term availability.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has constantly backed the youngsters ever since taking over the reigns of the team and the transition is apparent in the T20I WC and Test squads.
That does not mean Rohit’s place is under immediate threat. It simply means performances matter more than ever.
Afghanistan Provides the Perfect Opportunity
Historically, Rohit has enjoyed facing Afghanistan. In three ODI innings against them, he has scored 150 runs at an average of 75. His most memorable effort came during the 2023 World Cup in Delhi, when he blasted 131 from just 84 deliveries and completely dismantled Afghanistan’s attack.
India will hope for a repeat. The Afghanistan series may not carry the intensity of an ICC tournament or a major bilateral contest against Australia or England, but it arrives at an important moment in India’s evolution. The team is transitioning towards a younger core under Gill’s leadership while simultaneously attempting to maximise the contributions of experienced players.
Rohit occupies the intersection of those two objectives. His experience remains invaluable. His batting remains capable of winning matches. But India also need reassurance that he can maintain those standards consistently over the next two years.
The Road to 2027 Begins Now
The discussion surrounding Rohit Sharma should not be framed as a debate about retirement or decline. His ODI record since the 2023 World Cup final demonstrates that he remains one of the world’s most dangerous opening batters. Few players can still change the course of a match within the first ten overs as effectively as he can.
The bigger question is whether he can continue doing so regularly enough to remain indispensable.
With Gill now leading India’s ODI side, Rohit’s place in the team will increasingly be evaluated on performances rather than legacy, making the Afghanistan series an important checkpoint in his journey towards the 2027 World Cup.
For one of India’s greatest ODI batters, the challenge is straightforward.
Score runs. Stay fit. Remove the doubts before they grow louder.
