Lucas Torreira focused to ‘take advantage’ after Uruguay Return, admits India match ‘A big Test for Us’

Former Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira was not part of the Uruguay squad in the World Cup 2026, and after a return to the team, he hopes to make the maximum of it.

Torreira, who currently plays for Galatasaray, is back in the Garra Charrua squad for the first time since 2024. The new manager Diego Forlán brought him back into the side, and the midfielder wants to make the most of it.

Lucas Torreira back for Uruguay after ‘A Long Time’

“I am very happy to be back in the national team after a long time. I am enjoying being with my teammates, enjoying the atmosphere, which is very nice, and taking advantage of the opportunities. I am always grateful,” Lucas Torreira said to MyKhel’s question during a pre-match meet on Monday.

‘India is a marvellous Country I didn’t Know’

The Uruguayan midfielder has been having a good time in Kolkata. Having arrived at the city five days ago, they have travelled to some heritage places in the city, and also had a trip to the Eden Gardens to try out cricket. And speaking about his time, the player had only good things to say.

“It’s a wonderful country that I didn’t know. We were able to visit, to get to know the culture in every corner of this city. This country is wonderful. I thank you for your love. You have treated us in the best way. I hope we can give a nice show for everyone tomorrow,” Torreira added.

Diego Forlan, being the head coach, has already shared information about India with his players, and Uruguayan players know they have a task in hand. Although the Blue Tigers are far below the rankings, Torreira reckoned it will be a tough match for them.

“India is an interesting team. We want to face them. We don’t want to underestimate any team. We know that tomorrow is going to be a big test for us,” he said.

The 31-year-old wants to win for his national team, but also stressed his wish to finish on a high note against a country where he feels ‘the quality of the people is amazing.’
