South Africa Ready For Mexico In World Cup Opener, Broos Warns

Hugo Broos believes South Africa arrive as prepared as possible for a demanding World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico in 2026. Bafana Bafana begin the tournament needing a strong result, facing opponents who enjoy home backing and an impressive record at their Mexico City stadium.

The match replays the opening fixture of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but this is Bafana Bafana’s first tournament appearance abroad since 2002. Broos accepts the scale of the challenge, yet also backs the detailed work done on and off the training pitch.

Broos stressed that South Africa have prepared specific tactical responses for different phases of play against Mexico. “We know what to do against Mexico. We know what to do when they have the ball and when we have possession. Everything is focused on this game,” said Broos.

The coach highlighted Mexico’s unity and mobility, warning that every opponent within their squad carries a threat. “They are all dangerous, they are a very good team with a lot of movement and solidarity. You can see they really want to be world champions.”

This World Cup curtain-raiser is the first time the competition’s opening fixture repeats a previous standalone opener, from among 19 earlier editions. Mexico are unbeaten in seven World Cup games at the Mexico City venue, winning five and drawing two, which underlines the size of Bafana Bafana’s task.

Mexico’s preparations have also been positive. They won all three pre-tournament friendlies, finishing that programme with a 5-1 victory over 10-man Serbia. Despite this form and the home support, Broos insisted that South Africa could still trouble the co-hosts if the performance level is high enough.

“You can see that with the way Mexico play. We will have to be at our best level if we want to get a result. It is a very complete team,” Broos added. “For us it will be very important to stick to the game-plan, and we dont listen to what is happening in the stands.”

South Africa’s build-up results were less convincing, with draws against Nicaragua and Jamaica in their warm-up fixtures. However, Broos’ team emerged top of their CAF qualifying group, finishing one point above Nigeria. Those qualifiers showed consistency, even if friendly performances have raised some questions.

Across that CAF campaign, Bafana Bafana trailed in only one game on the pitch. That came in a 2-0 defeat to Rwanda in November 2023. A separate 3-0 loss to Lesotho was awarded administratively after South Africa fielded an ineligible player, rather than being decided during open play.

South Africa’s wider World Cup history adds further context. The team have never advanced past the first round at the finals. This time, Group A also includes South Korea and Czechia, meaning every point against Mexico could prove crucial in the race for qualification.
