Panaji Police has registered an Unnatural Death case after veteran actor Nana Patekar died at his Goa residence following a cardiac arrest. The 75-year-old actor was taken to Manipal Hospital in Bambolim early on Thursday morning, where doctors said he was brought dead.

The case has been filed under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Police records state that Patekar was brought from his residence at Ocean Park in Dona Paula to the hospital casualty ward. The enquiry is being conducted by PSI Nitin Naik.
Why a case was registered after Nana Patekar’s death
The police case does not, by itself, suggest suspicion. In cases where a person dies at home and is brought dead to a hospital, authorities often register a medico-legal case to complete the required procedure and rule out foul play.
Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, told ANI, “They shifted him to our hospital at around 4:20 or 4:30 am. We also tried our best, but he was brought dead. Then we had to file a police case because there’s an MLC.”
Patekar’s death led to an outpouring of grief across Maharashtra and the Hindi film industry. Fans gathered to pay tribute, while artists and admirers remembered his long career, intense screen presence and reputation for socially conscious work beyond cinema.
Final rites held with state honours in Pune
The actor’s mortal remains were flown from Goa to Maharashtra later on Thursday. His funeral was held at his farmhouse in Donje village, on the outskirts of Pune, where he was cremated with full state honours on Thursday night.
Thousands of fans reached the farmhouse to offer their last respects. Several political leaders and film personalities also attended the funeral, though many members of the film industry could not be present as the last rites took place late at night.
Speaking to reporters after the funeral, Patekar’s son Malhar said, “A person like Nana Saheb never truly leaves us; his achievements have made him immortal.” He added that carrying forward his father’s vision would shape the family’s path ahead.
Malhar also explained why the family went ahead with the funeral the same day. He said the mortal remains took time to arrive from Goa, but the family decided not to delay the rites further as the actor had died early in the morning.
Nana Patekar is survived by his wife, Neelkanthi Patekar, and son, Malhar. The police enquiry in Goa will continue as part of the standard legal process followed in such medico-legal cases.
