Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White delivers a strong warning over how Caitlin Clark is being handled in the WNBA, after Clark left a narrow 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury with a back injury at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and did not play the final quarter.
Clark, viewed as central to Indiana Fever’s plans, had already been dealing with back problems this season, and Stephanie White argues that persistent heavy contact and inconsistent officiating have created an unsafe situation for the 24-year-old guard during recent games.

White focused much of the post-game discussion on refereeing decisions, stressing that officials knew tension existed after the previous matchup between these teams, yet challenges around Clark’s protection continued. White said, “We have a generational talent and WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots [against her] right there that weren’t called, White said. Absolutely unacceptable. Number one, you’ve got to call it. It’s absolutely egregious and utterly disrespectful.”
The coach then criticised how reviews were handled by officials. White said, “[The referees] are coming in here aware of what happened two nights ago, and that s*** still happens. And the reckless closeout that they actually reviewed… that wasn’t upgraded. To me that’s like a do-over on a test; how do you screw it up again? Absolutely disrespectful. We spent all off-season looking at officiating, and I still say the one thing that we keep asking for is consistency. [Clark] is not called the same way as everybody else is called. The fist in the throat is crazy. It’s crazy. It’s dangerous. When you have these things continue to happen time and time and time again, eventually it gets frustrating.”
The most discussed clash happened in the second quarter. DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas both landed on Caitlin Clark after a play, with Thomas appearing to press a fist into Clark’s neck before standing up, an action that fuelled White’s anger over contact that, in White’s view, went unpunished.
The latest meeting came only two days after Indiana Fever defeated Phoenix Mercury in a fiery contest that produced six technical fouls and one ejection, meaning tempers and scrutiny were already high before this rematch, in which Clark again faced several heavy hits from Mercury defenders.
Before leaving with the back problem, Caitlin Clark delivered another strong offensive performance for Indiana Fever, adding outside shooting and distribution while under physical pressure from Phoenix Mercury defenders.

Clark had already missed one game last month due to a back issue, raising concern inside Indiana Fever about recurring problems for the 24-year-old. During this contest, the team confirmed the guard would not return after the latest knock:
White believes ongoing physical punishment and the current standard of officiating place Clark at greater risk.
For Indiana Fever and wider WNBA followers, the episode deepens the debate about how stars such as Caitlin Clark are protected, how consistently rules are applied, and whether recent high-contact incidents, including those against Phoenix Mercury, will prompt any change from officials or the league.
