Ecuador, the name of the country comes from the Equator, as the imaginary line which bisects the world into two hemispheres, runs through this nation in South America.
And on Thursday (June 25), the entire country won’t sleep. The roads from Quito to Guayaquil, Cuenca to Montanita are filled with thousands of fans, who are rejoicing their country’s amazing achievement as they reached the knockouts of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

La Tricolor, which is the nickname of the Ecuador Football team, did the unthinkable. After just a point in the first two matches, they took on four-time World Champions Germany and beat them 2-1, that also coming from behind. In the 77th minute of the match, Gonzalo Plata scored a poacher’s goal as Ecuador are in the Round of 32 of this World Cup, their first knockouts in two decades.
But as the players were celebrating the goal, a fan held the Ecuador flag at the stands, which had written ‘No Mas Guerra’, which translates to ‘No More War’. But what is the reason behind this? Why has a fan put up his nation’s flag and has pasted a peace message?
No Mas Guerra – A Peace Appeal to Nation’s Ongoing Conflict?
It is not a football slogan or an official message from the Ecuadorian Football Federation. Rather, it is a peace message displayed by supporters.
Given Ecuador’s current situation, the banner most likely refers to the country’s ongoing internal armed conflict against organized criminal gangs. Since 2024, Ecuador has experienced severe violence linked to drug trafficking, prison riots, kidnappings, assassinations and attacks on security forces. The government’s response has included declaring an “internal armed conflict” and deploying the military. Many Ecuadorians have called for peace and an end to the violence.
Is it a Message for the Ecuador Fans in World Cup?
But questions come into mind if the written message was indicating Ecuador’s own fans, who put themselves in a bother after recent visuals showed a mass fight in the USA among themselves.
A Fight between Barcelona and LDU Quito Fans
On Wednesday, the travelling Ecuadorian fans clashed among themselves in New York’s Times Square. During the flag-raising ceremony, the two sets of supporters collided. The incident was not related to the Ecuador national team but stemmed from one of the fiercest rivalries in Ecuadorian football.
Barcelona SC, based in Guayaquil, is the country’s most popular club, while Quito-based LDU are among Ecuador’s most successful teams, famously winning the 2008 Copa Libertadores. Their passionate fan bases have shared a long-standing rivalry that occasionally spills over beyond domestic competitions.
The fans were seen throwing punches at each other, hurling kicks as things got ugly between the compatriots. Hence, the possible message was probably to unite the fans as their nation beckons history.
Whatever the reason maybe, the message is spot on. For Ecuador, the time is to remain calm and embrace this moment. With an incredible achievement, La Tri can reach loftier heights in this competition. With the recent surge in the game in the country, Ecuador’s future seems bright in the global landscape.
